The game Engage/Disengage comes from the book Control Unleashed: Reactive to Relaxed by Leslie McDevitt.

This is by no means a perfect example, but the shifting of her eyes and turning of her head to receive the treat is the idea behind it. I am using treats helps to work towards changing her negative emotional response to a positive emotional response. She's still not there yet, but she has come a long way from charging and biting the vacuum.

What's on the menu tonight?

It's that time of year again! ⚡ Here are some tips and tricks to help you and your pup ride out the storms.

At night, consider leaving a light on so the contrast of darkness to flashing isn't so bright.

Use white noise or calming music turned up to help cover the contrast of quiet to thunder. You can find free videos or radio stations on YouTube by searching calming music for dogs. There are also free white noise apps in your preferred app store.

If you give medication to your dog for their stress and anxiety, make sure that they receive a dose with enough time for it to kick in and be effective. If your dog does not have any medication and they are extremely stressed during storms, discuss the phobia with your vet ASAP to get meds ready to give as needed for these weather events.

In advance, prepare high-value treats and high-value enrichment activities. If we can keep their stress level down, we can use these to change their underlying emotions associated with the storm sounds. If they are scared, comfort them the way they prefer.

Please note that if your dog is refusing high value foods, they may be too stressed. This is when you should pivot and work towards decreasing the overpowering stimuli due to the lightning, thunder, wind, hail, etc.

This nap was brought to you by...
tonight's enrichment.

A to-go cup holder stuffed with some treats, a treat dispensing ball with more treats, a log with baby squirrels and hidden treats, and a treat-filled toilet tube.

This was followed by a solid chew session with her bully stick.

Don't waste these beautiful days!

Bring your dog outside with you and help them learn to relax in different environments.

Sophie sat up to let us know that there was a child bouncing a basketball at the neighboring school. We still have some improvements to make, but overall I am very pleased with her ability to remain under threshold when something unexpected occurs.

I was in a cleaning mood this morning, so we started our day with an early desensitization and counter conditioning session.

This is my dog Sophie. She struggles with anxiety and is on daily medication to help her work through her fears and big reactions. She has come a long way with her vacuum fears and only rarely tries to bite the vacuum.
