We’re gonna work on sit/down with the addition of loose leash walk this week!

If anybody wants a demo of how I usually teach a loose leash, then I’m more than happy to do one before we started!

We’re gonna be at the reservoir tomorrow!

I decided to alternate between my house and the reservoir to give people the option of less crowded, low distraction areas and higher distraction, more popular areas.

Look at tomorrow’s scheduled event for more info and bring lots of water! We don’t have to be out for the whole hour but it will be toasty

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test Outline:

Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger
- The dog must be calm while the Evaluator approaches the team and greats handler.
- Demonstrates the dog is safe when a stranger approaches and interacts with the handler. No reactivity or dangerous/fearful behaviors are present.

Test 2: Sitting politely for petting
- The dog allows the Evaluator to pet them while the dog is in a sit
- Shows dog is safe for strangers to interact with no dangerous/fearful behaviors or jumping up

Test 3: Appearance and grooming
- The dog will allow an assessment to be done similar to that done by a vet/groomer
- Evaluator will brush the dog normally, check ears, and handle front feet to asses for any fear/dangerous behaviors (This will be hard for a lot of dogs)

Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
- demonstrates the dog is attentive to the handler and not pulling on the leash.
The Evaluator will be looking for a loose leash, not a heel, and the dog can be on either side. The handler must be in control of the dog at all times.

Test 5: Walking through a crowd
- The dog is walking loose leash between people
- The Evaluator will be looking for how well the handler maintains control of the dog and no sign of fearful/dangerous behaviors from dog

Test 6: Sit and down on cue and stay in place
- Shows the dog has training and can follow handler instructions
- The dog has to do both on cue but the handler can choose which position the dog will successfully do a stay in. The Evaluator is looking for the dog being attentive and listening to the handler. Performed with a 20ft line attached to dog.

Test 7: Coming when called
- Showing the dog has a recall
- With the 20ft line attached, the handler walks away 10ft and calls the dog to them while the Evaluator notes how responsive the dog is.

Test 8: Reaction to another dog
- Showing the dog can be polite around strange dogs
- Two handlers walk towards each other while the dog remains neutral to the other team, stopping appropriately when handlers stop to interact. No fearful/dangerous behaviors towards the other team are allowed.

Test 9: Reaction to distraction
- The dog can handle a reasonable amount of distraction while working
- 2 distractions will be chosen at random, and the dog shouldn't panic or react dangerously. The dog startling and recovering is ok.

Test 10: Supervised separation
- Dog can maintain polite behaviors when left with a person other than the handler
- Handler must be out of sight for 3 minutes and the dog should not excessively bark, whine, etc. A mild level of nervousness is ok.

Hello everyone! This is long so like the post to show you’ve read it all.

The game plan for this evening:

Tonight we’re going to get to know each other and talk about our goals and answer any questions I am able to. We’ll start of working on everyone getting a CGC (canine good citizen) and while we work toward that goal we can discuss what sports and activities we want to do with the club. You can bring dogs as long as you’ve liked the rules post. I do have a crating area and plenty of parking space at my house which is the location for tonight. This is my home so also make sure you bring bags to clean up after your dogs.

I’m about a quarter mile down from Nephi Pasture in a big red barn/garage to the left. My white Subaru will be out front along with other cars.

If you bring your dog we’ll be working on having them hang out (called stand on leash/sit in dog) so it won’t be the flashiest of training sessions but I think it’s a good low key exercise for the first meeting. I’ll have more of a training game plan once I see where everyone is at with training. I know we’ll have some more advanced teams and some novice teams so it’s just a matter of assessing who needs what and how reasonable it is to accomplish it all in an hour.

The member fee will start next week and is $10 per session so up to $40 a month since we meet once a week.

MOST IMPORTANT: there is not a public bathroom at my place so make sure you go before you come or are comfortable peeing in a bush.

Training class gear: treat pouch, treats, leash, kennel if needed, extra gear your dog might need like muzzles, ecollars, prong, harness, etc. we do not hear shame here! You’re also welcome to bring a mat/towel/blanket for your dog to relax on. This is a group setting but there may be down time so you’re welcome to bring a chair.

Rules for Club:

Like this post so I know you’ve read the rules

These rules ensure a safe environment for people and dogs.

1. All dogs must be contained in a vehicle/crate or on a 6 ft leash.

2. No dog introductions. We are not allowing on/off leash greetings or introductions unless the dogs are in the same household. You’re more than welcome to set up playdates outside of club.

3. Going along with rule 2: give everyone space. Do not allow you dog to invade the space of other people or dogs cus we are here to learn and be a safe space for reactive dogs.

4. No tool shaming. Every dog is different and may need different things. This is not the space to debate training tools.

5. The club will have to charge a club fee. This fee will cover the costs of fun events, seminars, and equipment. The fee is $10/meeting if you bring dogs and I will do my best not to raise prices unless absolutely necessary.
