Your dog’s “healthy weight” might not look the same as another dog’s 👀

Over half of dogs in the U.S. are overweight or clinically obese, and roughly a third of owners with overweight dogs don’t realize their pup is carrying extra weight. That matters because excess weight can affect mobility, overall health, and even lifespan.

Genetics account for about 51% of body weight variation within individual dog breeds, while environmental factors like diet and exercise make up the rest.

An Italian Greyhound is naturally built to be lean, while breeds like Labs, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Dachshunds may be more prone to weight gain. Some dogs may also have genetic predispositions to health conditions, like hypothyroidism, that can affect weight and body condition.

Their daily routine matters just as much. Portion sizes, treats, exercise, feeding habits, and regular weight checks all play a role, too.

A new wild cat species has been officially identified for the first time in over a century. Meet Leopardus tilcayo, a 3-pound spotted feline native to Bolivia, smaller than your housecat, and entirely unknown to science until now 🤯

What started as a wildlife sanctuary receiving a "weird cat" became years of genetic research that ultimately redrew the cat family tree. Thanks to DNA analysis led by National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz (), what was once believed to be a single widespread species turned out to be five distinct ones.

Is your dog a pumpkin fan? 🎃

While we won’t catch our dogs sipping on PSL’s for the fall season, they can still enjoy all the benefits of this nutritious snack! 😋

Just make sure it’s plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling, which can contain added sugar and spices.

As with all good things, moderation is key. Avoid introducing too much pumpkin too quickly to give your pet time to adjust to the new food.

Have you ever caught your dog in the "roaching" position? 🐾

You know the one — flat on their back, all four legs straight up in the air like they're cosplaying a cockroach 😂 While the term comes from Greyhounds, plenty of dogs across all breeds do it, and there are a few reasons why:

🌡️ They're regulating their temperature
A dog's belly has less fur than the rest of their body, so exposing it to the air is one of the easiest ways for them to cool down.

😌 They feel completely safe
Exposing their belly puts a dog in a vulnerable position. If they're sleeping like this, it means they feel 100% secure in their environment.

😴 It's just comfortable
Sometimes there's no deeper meaning; they've just figured out it feels good. Especially for dogs with lean, flexible builds, this position takes pressure off their joints and spine.

A dog that roaches regularly is usually nothing to worry about, but if it's a new behavior paired with other changes, it's always worth a quick mention to your vet.

Rhiannon shares breed similarities with Maine C**n and Ragdoll, two breeds with a known genetic predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) 🫀 Her Basepaws results revealed she carries one copy of a genetic mutation linked to HCM. This doesn’t mean Rhi has HCM, but it can increase her risk of developing the condition.
