Pseudorabies in dogs, also known as "mad itch" or Aujeszky's disease, is a rare, rapidly fatal viral infection caused by the suid herpesvirus 1.

Transmission

🐖 Primary Host: Pigs and wild boars are the natural reservoir for the virus.

How Dogs Get It:

🐕 Dogs usually catch the virus by eating raw or contaminated pork, or by hunting and coming into contact with infected feral swine.

🦠 Contagion:

It does NOT spread easily from dog to dog, and it CANNOT infect humans.

🏔️ Symptoms

The disease progresses very quickly, usually causing death within 6 to 96 hours after signs appear.

Symptoms include:

🐖 Intense, frantic itching and self-mutilation (mad itch), often around the face and head
🐶 Excessive drooling or salivation (ptyalism)
🐷 Behavioral changes like severe restlessness, vocalization, or aggression
🐕 Muscle stiffness, lack of coordination (ataxia), and convulsions
🐖 Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment:
🦠 There is no known effective treatment for pseudorabies in dogs, and the condition is almost always fatal.

Prevention:
🏔️ Keep dogs away from dead wild hogs, do not feed them raw pork, and prevent direct access to farm pigs.

You can help by reducing light attraction at your home:

💡 Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights, especially between September 15 and December 15.

✨Replace fixtures that scatter light in all directions with directional fixtures that point down and away from the beach. See examples of seabird-friendly lighting here.

💡 Shield light sources. Materials such as aluminum flashing can be used to direct light where it is needed.

✨Use low-intensity lighting. For example, replace white incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity lighting with a maximum 40-watt yellow bug light.

💡 Use lights with minimal short wave length (400-500nm) content.

✨Warm lights are best 1800-2200Kelvin.

💡 If you have large windows, draw drapes at night to keep interior lights from distracting the birds.

🐈‍⬛🦮🐈
If you are a pet owner, you can also help by keeping pets indoors or on leashes.
🐈🦮🐈‍⬛
Both cats and dogs can kill our ground-nesting seabirds.

🌙 wedge tailed shearwater fall out coming! 😱

We had a record breaking year last year caring for over 1000 birds. 🤯

This year looks like it is going to be the same 😮

Seabird fallout season peaks between September 15 and December 15, when young fledglings navigating by the moon become disoriented by urban lighting and land on the ground.

They then can be injured by humans, pets and wildlife. 🧍‍♀️🧍🦮🐈🐈‍⬛🐀

To help we need to reduce light pollution: Turn off unneeded lights: Shut off decorative, flood, and security lights, or switch them to motion detectors.

Use downward shielding: Point outdoor fixtures down to the ground rather than letting light scatter upward or outward.

Change bulb types: Replace bright white or high-intensity bulbs with low-wattage yellow “bug lights” or warm spectrum LEDs (1800–2200 Kelvin).

Close curtains: Draw drapes at night to stop indoor lights from confusing passing birds.

How to Safely Rescue Downed Birds?
Do not feed them: Never try to feed or give water to a grounded seabird.

Pick them up carefully: Put a lightweight towel, t-shirt, or clean pillowcase gently over the bird’s head (watch out for the sharp beak) and scoop it up around the wings to protect its delicate waterproofing oils.

Place in a ventilated box: Put the bird safely inside a secure cardboard box with small holes punched for air.

Keep pets away: Keep cats and dogs indoors so they cannot prey on disoriented birds.

💕We will be working with Hawaii Wildlife Center. 💕

You can bring them to us or the Honolulu Zoo
