The PBC community is seeing more cases of Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) than usual. This virus is causing very serious illness and, in some cases, sudden death. Both kittens and adult cats can get sick.
The virus is transmitted by f***s or vomit and can persist in an environment for months if not cleaned properly. The virus can be inactivated by disinfection and hand washing. Hand sanitizer does not affect this organism.
While it is common for cases of FPV to arise every year, a new strain that has become prevalent is affecting a large population of cats both in the shelter and out in the community.
Symptoms of FPV include not eating, vomiting, diarrhea (it may have blood in it), acting very tired or weak, not drinking enough water or looking dehydrated, and losing weight. If your cats have any of these signs, get veterinary care right away. Cats with this disease can become very sick very quickly, and some may not survive.
