#6 for the season. This one was just a flawless track by beau. At just under a mile this buck lay in the creek. This buck was likely bumped last night while the hunter took up the track.

Conclusion from todays earlier scenario:

Sometimes things happen that make zero sense. Other times they make perfect sense; we just fail to recognize the obvious. The hunter in this case was correct on shot placement. This buck made it 395 yards, jumped a fence, and immediately expired.

Now, where did the white hair come from?
The answer is in the buck's mule kick. If you look closely, this hair is not cut like we often see with low brisket shots. Also, notice how it is thrown around rather than a razor cut with the tuft of hair falling after being cut. The hind hooves ripped hair out while it jumped and mule kicked.

No matter how many of these amazing animals you have harvested or tracked, never forget there is always something new to discover.

The bull elk was up bugling with his cows. We called the track at 1100 yards.

Let's see how well the average hunter reads this scenario!

Okay, so the hunter calls and is 100% positive he hit this deer great with a crossbow 2-inch mechanical broadhead at 15 yards from a ground blind, and the terrain is level. He says the entrance is just behind the shoulder, maybe just a touch low, but not at or below the belly line. The buck runs about 100 yards away, turns back, head erect, looks at the hunter, then bounds off. The hunter sends this picture from the hit site.

What is your conclusion, and what is your take on the evidence in these pictures?

Do you think this deer was recovered?
If it was recovered, how far do you think it went?

The actual conclusion will be posted this evening.

It’s not often that you get called to track a bull elk in Kansas. I made a quick call to Tommy Duke with Boone’s Trail Deer Recovery, and off we went.

The bull was shot yesterday evening with a muzzleloader and, shortly afterward, was also shot by an archery hunter. They attempted to track it but only found blood for about 70 yards.

Both dogs took to the trail right away and off we went. About 400 yards across a ridge and into the next draw, we bumped the bedded and wounded bull. After a quick discussion and game plan, we were able to get eyes on him and follow the trail to where he bedded.

With the wind having shifted, we had to regroup and make a loop to get the wind in our favor. After making the move, Tommy kept the dogs back while I moved in with the hunter for a follow-up shot.

We got within 20 yards, and the hunter took his shot. After a 15-minute wait, we took up the trail post-shot, and the bull was down 30 yards later. In total the bull traveled just under a mile.

What a track—and just a great plan that came together for one very happy hunter!
