Atascosa County Animal Control is a public service agency focused on fostering responsible pet ownership, enforcing animal-related laws, and ensuring the humane treatment of all animals. Atascosa County Animal Control (ACAC) has served the community since October 2018, working to protect the health, safety, and welfare of both animals and residents. Euthanasia, though difficult, is sometimes a necessary part of our responsibility to ensure humane care and public safety. We invite the community to get involved—adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, or help spread awareness. Together, we can make a difference for the animals of Atascosa County. 🐾 September Shelter Update! 🐾

September was a busy and impactful month for our team at Atascosa County Animal Control! Here is a look at what we’ve been up to in our community:

🐾 Hands-On Community Support
Our officers responded to over 230 calls for service across the county this month, helping animals in need and managing complex field situations.

🤝 Working Together for Animals
Through our strong partnerships with regional rescue groups, we were able to transfer 107 animals out into rescue placement this month! We also helped reunite pets with their owners and found loving new homes for local shelter pets.

🎓 Continuing Education
To ensure we are providing the highest level of care and service, our Animal Control team is gearing up for specialized training this coming month, covering advanced field tactics, investigation management, and animal welfare practices.

Thank you to everyone in our community who continues to support our mission and help keep Atascosa County’s pets safe! 🐶🐱✨

These tiny kittens need a little help 🐾💛

We’re running low on wet kitten food, which is essential for our youngest shelter babies who can’t eat dry kibble yet. If you can donate a few cans, it makes a huge difference.

🚨 OUR CAT ROOM IS AT MAXIMUM OCCUPANCY! 🚨

Look, we love cats. But right now, we have way too many of them, and more are arriving every single day! Our cat room is completely full, and if we don't start getting these purr-machines into forever homes ASAP, we are going to be facing the heart-breaking reality of having to euthanize for space. 💔

So, we are officially calling on all cat lovers (and "I'm not a cat person, but..." people) to save the day!

Whether you want a tiny, chaotic kitten who runs around at 3 AM or a lazy adult cat who will treat your lap like prime real estate, we have your perfect match waiting right now.

🐾 Adoption Fee: $100

Everything is included:

✅ Spay/Neuter surgery

✅ Microchip

✅ All age-appropriate vaccinations

Adopting today means you get a fully vetted, lovable companion and you directly save a life by freeing up a kennel for the next intake. It’s a total win-win.

Her entire kittenhood is slipping away inside a shelter kennel. 💔✨

Little Tammy arrived here on July 13th as a tiny, vulnerable baby. Now, two full months later, this gorgeous black-and-white tuxedo girl is almost 4 months old—and she has spent half her life waiting behind metal bars for a family to choose her.

Instead of spending her kitten days chasing feather toys, exploring a living room, or purring herself to sleep in a warm lap, Tammy watches the world go by from inside a cage. Yet despite all the time that’s passed, she remains the sweetest, most affectionate little girl who just craves love and attention.

She’s at that magical, playful age and deserves so much more than growing up in a shelter.

Will you be the one to break her out and give her the loving home she’s been dreaming of since July? 🐾❤️

🖤 Adoption Fee: $100

⏰ Hours: Monday – Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM

How can a puppy’s entire childhood pass inside a shelter kennel? 💔

When Zipper and Chevy arrived in May, they were helpless 2-month-old babies who fit in the palm of your hand. Four long months later, they are 5-month-old, 22-pound Terrier mixes who have spent almost every single day of their lives waiting behind metal bars.

They watch family after family walk past, holding onto the hope that today will be the day someone picks them. Despite growing up in a kennel, these sweet siblings haven't lost their gentle, loving spirits:

🐾 Zipper (Male): A total softie who presses against the gate just to get a gentle chin scratch. He lives for affection and loves making new doggy friends.
🐾 Chevy (Female): Pure puppy joy! She loves making a splash in the kiddie pool and dreams of a backyard to run and play in.

They are expected to stay a manageable medium size (under 40 lbs), excel in dog playgroups, and are so ready to learn what living in a warm, loving home feels like.

Don't let them spend another day of their puppyhood in a kennel. Adopt them together or separately!

💔 Adoption Fee: $150 each

⏰ Hours: Monday – Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM

🚨 URGENT NEED: WET FOOD DONATIONS 🚨

Our wet food shelves are running dangerously low, and we need a little help from our amazing community!

While dry kibble makes up the bulk of our pets' diets, wet food is critical for so many animals in our care. It provides vital hydration, helps our senior pets who struggle with hard food, gives a boost to young puppies and kittens, and helps coax anxious or recovering animals into eating.

If you're able to pitch in, you can order directly off our Amazon Wishlist and have it shipped right to our door:

👉 Amazon Wishlist: https://a.co/0dJ4AKhv

Every single can makes a huge difference in keeping our shelter pets healthy, happy, and full.

Prefer to drop off locally? We gladly accept un-opened cans of dog and cat food directly at the shelter during our normal business hours!

Thank you all so much for your continued love and support—our four-legged friends appreciate you more than you know! ❤️🐾

🐾 August 2026 Monthly Shelter Update 🐾

Our latest stats for Atascosa County Animal Control are in! It was another busy month, and we want to share the reality with our community while celebrating the lives we were able to change.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

📈 Intake remains high: We took in 194 animals in August—97 stray dogs and 63 stray cats. This constant influx highlights the ongoing challenges we face regarding pet homelessness.

❤️ Positive Outcomes: While the work is hard, the rewards are real! Last month, we were able to find forever families for 35 pets (19 dogs, 16 cats)! Another 12 animals were reunited with their owners. We are also incredibly grateful to our rescue partners, who took in 52 of our animals (38 dogs, 14 cats) to give them another chance. These 211 successful outcomes are why we do what we do.

⚖️ The Reality: We need to be transparent. Our Live Release Rate for August was 49%. This number is a direct reflection of the continuous high intake and limited resources. It is not where we want to be, and it’s a difficult reminder of the challenges shelters across the country face.

🤝 How You Can Help: These statistics are a call to action. We cannot do this work alone. Your support is vital:

ADOPT, DON'T SHOP: Visit our shelter! We have so many incredible animals waiting for their second chance.

RESCUE/TRANSFER PARTNERS: If you are a licensed rescue organization, please reach out to see how we can collaborate.

SHARE: Even if you can’t adopt, sharing this post helps these animals get seen.

VOLUNTEER/DONATE: Time and resources are always critical needs. Contact the shelter directly to see what is most needed right now.

Together, we can continue to make a difference. Thank you for standing with the animals of Atascosa County.
