Chaparral Veterinary Center, P.C. Progressive Veterinary Care in South Texas Chaparral Veterinary Center was founded in 1984 with a focus on the future.

This award winning facility was built to reflect the type of veterinary practice we wanted to bring to South Texas: Clean, bright, professional and efficient. We provide world class quality veterinary medicine in the comfort of a small town environment. We continually add to our services through continuing education involving our entire staff. Providing the highest quality of veterinary care takes a commitment to excellence. Dedication and hard work earned our facility a merit award and runner-up in Veterinary Economics Magazine for Hospital of the Year in the Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Contest in 1989. In addition, Dr. Clader was named the General Practitioner of the Year in the state of Texas in 1996. Award-winning quality and more, Chaparral Veterinary Center cares about you and your animals, providing a friendly and educational atmosphere to practice progressive, cutting edge veterinary medicine.

🦩 **VETERINARY EMERGENCY… SORT OF!** 🦩

We arrived at the clinic this morning to find a whole flock of **very pink, very quiet, and surprisingly well-behaved patients** waiting outside! 😂

After a thorough visual exam, we’re happy to report:
🦩 No appointment needed
🦩 No vaccines due
🦩 No nail trims requested
🦩 And thankfully… **NO FLAMINGO STOOL SAMPLES!** 🤣

Turns out, **we’ve been FLOCKED by JHS Project Grad Class of 2027!** 🎓❤️

We’re happy to support our seniors—and we have a feeling these birds may be looking for their **next unsuspecting home or business!** 👀🦩

We’re excited to have Marshall Mays at the hospital and are grateful for our continued partnership with Texas Tech University. We look forward to welcoming more future veterinarians as they gain valuable hands-on experience with our team.
Please join us in welcoming all of our veterinary students this year as they continue their journey of learning, growing, and serving the animals and communities they love!

Second rotation is in full swing for fourth-year RaiderVet Marshall Mays!

Marshall is currently at Chaparral Veterinary Center in Jourdanton, Texas, working alongside Dr. Jason Trial. He has seen a wide variety of cases and gained valuable real-world experience while learning from an outstanding veterinary team!

Protect your pets this 4th of July!

Fireworks may be fun for people, but they can be frightening and dangerous for pets. Please keep your pets indoors during and around the 4th of July, especially in the evening when fireworks are most common. Loud noises can cause pets to panic, run away, or injure themselves trying to escape.

If your pet is extremely fearful of loud noises, contact your veterinarian before the holiday to discuss whether sedatives or other calming options may be appropriate.

A few tips:
· Keep pets inside in a secure, quiet room
· Make sure collars and ID tags are up to date
· Check that microchip information is current
· Leave a TV, fan, or calming music on to help mask outside noise
· Never bring pets to fireworks shows

A little preparation can go a long way in keeping pets safe, calm, and at home this holiday. Please help us spread the word in our community.

New World Screwworm Control Starts with Prevention!

In both large and small animals, screwworm flies are attracted to open wounds, cuts, scrapes, and surgical sites. Unlike common fly larvae that may infect a wound with dead tissue, screwworm larvae invade and consume living flesh, turning even small wounds into a large problem.

For Dogs:
We use and recommend NexGard, a monthly flea and tick prevention, or NexGard PLUS, a monthly combo protection for flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasites. These preventions have been proven to kill larvae before they become a problem.

For Cats:
We use and recommend Revolution Plus for monthly flea and tick control in cats. The ingredients in Revolution Plus will also kill the larvae.

These products require a prescription and are aimed at preventing infection. If your pet is not currently on one of these products, please call to schedule an annual physical examination.

Prompt veterinary care, wound management, and physical removal of maggots remain essential. If you notice any suspicious wounds or maggot infestation, contact your veterinarian immediately.

For Horses and Cattle:
Check your animals daily for cuts, scrapes, surgical sites, or any draining wounds.
Treat wounds promptly. Catron® IV spray Wound Dressing, can help protect wounds from flies and is approved for use inside the wound.

Watch for signs of screwworm infestation:
• A wound that suddenly gets larger
• Foul odor or unusual discharge
• Excessive licking, biting, or irritation
• Visible maggots in a wound

Chaparral Veterinary Center is closely monitoring the situation and is here to help protect your pets and livestock. Prevention, daily observation, and prompt wound care remain our best defenses against the New World Screwworm.
