This past weekend we traveled to Topeka Kansas to compete in the Celebrating Kansas AQHA Show circut VRH Show. Brett Bentley and Short Oaks Legacy owned by Heather Sutton had success in the cutting pen. Placing 1st overall with a combined score of 150.5! Im Catty Like Daddy owned by Kayla Barnhart and DeWayne Barnhart made is 2nd appearance in the show pen placing 8th with a combine score of 142.5!
Misty Sanchez stallion Energizer Dunny showed huge improvement in the working cow horse after a 6 month hiatus from the show pen! Our daughter BrieAnn and her horse Got Me a Shinner had some personal bests in the cutting pen after 6 months off from working cattle due to an injury and ended up 1st over all the the weekend in VRH Rookie Youth Trail! We are so proud of everyone's accomplishments!

Fundamentals in training.

What are they to you? What is your number one most important fundamental?

For us at Bentley Performance Horses, it is TYING!

The ability to stand tied, quietly and relaxed, no pawing, pacing or pulling back. Just standing and waiting with a good mind.

This is a non negotiable in our program. In fact, none of our horses are even saddled until they can stand tied and relaxed. It’s the foundation that everything else is built on.

Pictured below is a 8 year old stallion, 4 year old stallion and 3 year old gelding. All 3 are relaxed, quiet and waiting for their turn to get selected to work.

This weekend, Brett Bentley made a quick trip to Mineral Wells for the maiden voyage to the show pen with our favorite 4 year old. It was a big milestone and an exciting step forward.
IM CATTY LIKE DADDY, owned by Kayla Barnhart and DeWayne Barnhart placed 5th in the 4-Year-Old Open and officially made himself an NCHA money earner in his very first trip out. We couldn’t be more pleased with this talented young horse and his bright future ahead.
Next, Brett piloted Short Oaks Legacy in the 25K Open Novice Horse for owner Heather Sutton , earning a 4th place finish and adding to his NCHA LTE as well.

Has lightly gathered cattle and tracked the mechanical cow—making an excellent AQHA VRH prospect for Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail, and Versatility. Big, stout, and handy enough to also make a solid ranch horse.
Excellent ground manners: ties, loads, lunges, ground drives, and stands quietly for the farrier and veterinarian. Had time off and came right back to work without issue.

Our hearts go out to everyone in Southern Oklahoma and Texas affected by this weekend’s winter storm. We feel incredibly fortunate to have only dealt with snow and cold weather and are praying for those who weren’t as lucky.
