The holidays are stressful enough without a trip to the emergency vet! 🚨😬

Luckily, we’ve got tips to keep your furry friend safe in Joplin this season. Here are a couple of our favorites...

TIP #1: Keep pets away from the kitchen

During Thanksgiving, the kitchen can be a high traffic zone. From getting under your feet to counter surfing, four legged friends should stay far out of the way. Avoid burns, spills, and other contact injuries for your pets (and you) by keeping them out of the cooking area.

TIP #2: Set your pet up for success

Before the festivities get underway, take care of your pet first. Make sure your dog or cat is well exercised. By burning off energy, they’re more likely to behave better and be less anxious. Pets with pent up energy can get into more mischief, which could lead to a trip to the emergency vet. Even though the holiday might throw off their routine, a little extra exercise and playtime can help the day feel special for them too.

For more tips on avoiding a pet emergency, check out the blog or talk to your Banfield Pet Hospital veterinary team.

What’s the best Thanksgiving dinner for your pet? 🍽️

Drumroll, please ... it’s their regular pet food! We know that’s not exciting, but it’s the truth. While some popular holiday foods likely won’t hurt your dog or cat, sticking to their regular diet is the healthiest, safest thing you can do for them.

Plus, make sure your pet AVOIDS these TOXIC foods and drinks:
- Garlic
- Onions
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Sugarless candy
- Grapes and raisins
- Caffeine
- Yeasted dough (raw bread or pastry dough)

Other questions about diet? Wondering how much food you should be feeding your dog or cat? Check out our Optimum Wellness Plans®. Each of these smart, affordable packages of preventive petcare includes a 1:1 nutrition coaching session with a Banfield Pet Hospital advisor.

Is your senior pet having mobility issues? 😺🐶

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a joint condition caused by cartilage degradation. Common signs of it include moving at a slower pace and having difficulty getting up or down.

- Other signs of osteoarthritis:
- Stiffness in limbs
- Limping
- Reluctance to go up or down the stairs or on furniture
- Losing interest in playing
- Sitting with a back leg loosely to the side

If you notice any of these signs in your dog or cat, talk to your Banfield Pet Hospital vet in Joplin. Osteoarthritis isn’t reversible, but you may be able to help slow the progression to provide comfort for your senior.

Dr. Elizabeth Gammon shared some tips on boosting your dog’s food game. 🐶 Here are a couple standouts:

Watch those portions
Pet obesity is an epidemic. Extra weight can be painful for your dog’s joints and lead to several health issues. If you can’t easily feel your dog’s ribs and they lack a visible waistline, they probably have some weight to lose.

Think of dental health
While nothing replaces the effectiveness of regular teeth brushing and professional dental cleanings, your dog’s dental health can benefit from dental treats. These specially formulated chew treats help reduce bacteria that can lead to stinky breath and dental disease.

For personalized nutrition recommendations, make sure to check out our Optimum Wellness Plans®. Each of these smart, affordable packages of preventive pet care includes a 1:1 nutrition coaching session with a trained advisor.

Stay safe out there in Joplin! 🐕

Exposing your dog to the outside world can be risky — since there’s always the potential for contact with an infectious disease. Common diseases your dog can contract include canine flu, canine distemper, kennel cough, ringworm, and leptospirosis.

Places where your dog can contract a disease:
- Dog parks
- Stores or farmers markets
- Dog bars
- Restaurants
- Campgrounds
- Festivals
- Dog events
- Overgrown backyards
- Even just walking on a public sidewalk

Luckily, there are some simple ways to help keep your dog safe from common diseases. Two of the most important are ensuring your dog is on year-round parasite prevention and that they’re up to date on their vaccinations.

Talk to your veterinary team at Banfield Pet Hospital - Joplin for more ways to look out for your dog’s health.

Pets typically show pain through behavioral changes. While these may be apparent in dogs, cats are notoriously good at hiding their pain — so you may need to be extra observant with feline friends. 🐱

Common signs of pain in dogs and cats:
- Slow to rise
- Changes in how cat goes up/down steps or jumps on/off things
- Going to the bathroom outside the litterbox
- Less interest in play
- Decreased grooming
- Irritability or hiding
- Licking or chewing a certain spot
- Less energy, increased sleeping
- Difficulty with or avoiding stairs

Assessing and treating your pet’s pain takes a strong partnership between you and your vet. If you think your pet may be in pain, visit your vet care team at Banfield Pet Hospital - Joplin. Make an appointment today!
