Dogs will learn a set of rules even if you aren't knowingly teaching them rules. Make sure you're teaching them the right things.

If you greet a dog who is jumping on you they have now learned
jumping = attention.

One benefit of training is avoiding these unintended lessons.

"Do I need any special equipment to train my dog?"

Well, it depends a little bit on what you're training your dog to do, but in general the answer is no!
You simply need something that motivates the dog, usually treats, and a distraction free area.
For training a dog to heel (walk nicely on a leash) you simply need treats, a flat collar, and a leash. No special collars or leashes are required. In fact, often things marketed to us to "help" with walking nicely on a leash actually hinder the training process. If you're using a harness or a retractable leash, they might be working against you rather than for you. Please remember though, that every dog is different and if it ain't broke don't fix it!
