Wellness Wednesday!

A good daily walk is one of the best things you can do for your dog’s physical and mental health.

The key is consistency over distance. A calm, structured 20 to 30 minute walk every day is better than one long walk on the weekend. It helps burn energy, keeps their muscles strong, and gives them the mental stimulation they need.

How often are you able to walk your dog?”

Trainer Tip Tuesday!
Tired of your dog jumping all over guests?
Instead of saying ‘no’ or pushing them off, try this: The moment their front paws leave the ground, turn your back and completely ignore them. As soon as all four paws hit the floor, turn back around and give them attention.
Jumping stops working when it doesn’t get them what they want.
Who else struggles with a jumper?

Myth Buster Monday!

Myth: You should only use positive reinforcement and never correct your dog.

Truth: Real-life dog training requires all four quadrants of operant conditioning — positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment.

The goal isn’t to be “positive only.” The goal is to be balanced and fair— using the right tool at the right time with the right amount of pressure. Clear communication and fair corrections, paired with lots of reinforcement for good choices, creates a dog that’s both happy and well-behaved.

There are many benefits to teaching your dog to down. Here are a few:

* It can help to prevent jumping. When your dog is in a down position, it is much less likely to jump up on people or other animals. This can be helpful for both safety and politeness.

* Reduced stress and anxiety. For some dogs, the down position can be a calming and relaxing place to be. This can be helpful for dogs who are feeling stressed or anxious.

* It can make grooming easier. When your dog is in a down position, it is much easier to brush them, trim their nails, or give them a bath. This can save you time and frustration.

Teaching your dog to down is a simple but effective way to improve their behavior and make your life easier. If you're not sure where to start, give us a call, we can help, 417-825-7810.

Happy Mother's Day to All the Dog Moms Out There!

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate all the wonderful mothers in our lives, and that includes dog moms! Dog moms are the ones who take care of their furry babies, train them, and love them unconditionally. They are truly the best moms there are.

If you're a dog mom, you know that training your dog can be a challenge, but it's also one of the most rewarding experiences. Watching your dog learn and grow is an amazing feeling, and it's all thanks to your patience and dedication.

Here are a couple of tips for training your dog on Mother's Day:

Be patient and consistent. Training a dog takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if your dog doesn't learn a command right away. Just keep practicing and they'll eventually get it.

Make it fun. Training should be fun for both you and your dog. If your dog is not having fun, they're less likely to want to learn. Try to make training sessions short and engaging, and use positive reinforcement, like treats or praise, to reward your dog for good behavior.

With a little patience and consistency, you can train your dog to be a well-behaved member of the family.

The "place" command is a valuable tool for dog owners. It can be used to teach your dog to settle down in a specific spot, whether you're at home, at the vet, or in a crowded place. It can also be used to keep your dog out of trouble, such as when you're cooking dinner or having guests over.

Here are some tips for teaching your dog the "place" command:

* Be patient and consistent. It may take some time for your dog to learn the command.
* Use positive reinforcement. Reward your dog with treats and praise when they do the command correctly.
* Make the mat or bed a comfortable and inviting place for your dog.
* Start in a quiet area with few distractions.
* Gradually add distractions as your dog masters the command.
* Be patient and consistent. It may take some time for your dog to learn the command.

Preparing Your Home for Your New Dog

Before you bring your new dog home, you should consider pet-proofing your house, such as putting up baby gates, escape-proofing the backyard, making sure that there is nothing harmful lying around that your dog can put in their mouth... the list goes on and on.

You'll also need supplies such as leashes and collars, toys, food, food bowls and treats--and don't forget about bedding! Dogs love their own blankets just as much as humans do.

It also helps to set up some rules for everyone in the house to follow. Who will walk your dog and when? How often will you feed your dog and when? Will your dog be allowed on the furniture? Where will they sleep at night? Are there any rooms in the house that are off-limits?

The first few weeks are quite important and can feel overwhelming. There are some big changes and adjustments for both you and your pooch. If you need some help give us a call, 417-825-7810.
