This is a good chart to study. Our friend Joseph Tenney of the Ohio Deer Trackers put this together throughout the tracking season with input from other Ohio Trackers. The red pins were dead and recovered deer. The green pins were confirmed alive. The blue pins were undetermined, the white pins were tracked and required a follow up shot.
This kind of science doesn’t lie.

A SHOT OF MYTH BUSTERS!🦌🤓
🌧️"RAIN WASHED AWAY ALL THE SCENT OF THE DEER I SHOT!"
🛑FALSE!

Rain may wash away all the signs of blood but it does NOT wash away all of the PHEROMONE scent that our dogs track! Unless we are talking severe flooding. 🐶
Remember that interdigital gland we always talk about? Here is its moment to shine! 🙌
It's wax. Which means it's oil!
And what doesn't mix with water? 🤔
OIL! 🤯
Hence your scent is safe with us! 😉 Well, at least our dogs, that have the Jacobson's organ that we do not.

Ever wonder how a doe finds her fawn? 🦌

While the interdigital gland is responsible for bucks tracking doe's during the rut, fawns may actually benefit the most from this gland. After a fawn is born, it will spend the next 10-14 days alone in hiding, as the mother avoids leaving scent around her newborn which may attract predators. When the mother goes back to find her fawn, she returns to the general area, but the doe is unaware of the exact location of her fawn since the fawn is likely to have gotten up and changed hiding spots. By following the unique scent trail left exclusively by her fawn and its interdigital gland, the doe can track and find her fawn.

TAKE MORE SHOTS! 🥃📸🤳
Not with your weapon though.. With your phone!
Make it a habit to document your blood/shot evidence. If you see hair, bone, meat, blood along your trail, snap a picture. 📸
Also take pictures of your arrow and broadhead. Tap on your screen, on your arrow, to focus. Why should you do this? This will help you better identify your own shots in future hunts! Once you recover your deer, you will be able to see where you hit and match your blood to it. Mostly, if in the event, you need a dog, your tracker is going to ask if you have pictures. Photos like this one, provide a lot of details in deciding wait times and shot placements. All this info increases your odds of recovery! Whether or not you need a dog!
Cheers! 🍻
