Sometimes, it only takes a small moment to shine a light on something meaningful. While waiting in line at a Lowe’s in Abilene, Texas, Judy and Brian Rose noticed a Golden Retriever walking through the store wearing an employee vest. Curious, they learned the dog belonged to an employee—a disabled Air Force veteran named Clay Luthy. Touched by what they saw, Judy snapped a quick photo and shared it online, unintentionally setting off a wave of attention that would soon reach far beyond their community.

For Clay, finding work hadn’t been easy. After multiple deployments and knee surgeries, he relied on his service dog, Charlotte, for support and stability—something that made many employers hesitant. But when he applied to Lowe’s, he was upfront about his needs. Instead of seeing a limitation, the company saw a capable candidate and chose to hire them both, making simple accommodations so Charlotte could remain by his side throughout the workday. “I can’t stand sitting at home,” Luthy said, determined to stay active and independent.

It didn’t take long for Charlotte to become a beloved presence in the store. Friendly and calm, she quickly won over customers and coworkers alike. “Everybody loves Charlotte,” Clay said, as she greeted shoppers and quietly stayed focused on her job. What started as a practical solution became something more...Charlotte became a source of connection, warmth, and joy for everyone who crossed her path.

In the end, the story isn’t about going viral—it’s about being given a chance. With Charlotte beside him, Clay found not just employment, but purpose and belonging. And thanks to a simple act of inclusion, one man and his loyal companion became a reminder that when we make room for people’s needs, we don’t just help them succeed—we make our communities stronger.
