This much-needed 24/7 emergency veterinary hospital just opened TODAY! It's an hour away in PA, but it's a straight shot down route 81. We are excited to finally have another after hours option for our clients!

WE’RE OFFICIALLY OPEN TOMORROW!!!!

After a very long road, Steamtown Veterinary Center will officially open our doors tomorrow!!!

Beginning tomorrow, 08/22/2026, we’ll be here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For anyone who is new to our page, Steamtown Veterinary Center is a privately owned veterinary hospital created to provide Northeastern Pennsylvania with emergency veterinary care when your pet is sick, injured, or needs immediate care.

We are not here to replace your regular veterinarian. We’re here to work alongside the amazing general practices in our community by providing emergency and urgent care, hospitalization, surgery, diagnostics, and continued care when your regular veterinarian may not be available.

Our hospital is equipped for:
• Emergency and urgent veterinary care
• 24 hour hospitalization and monitoring
• Emergency and urgent surgery
• Soft tissue surgery
• Dentistry, dental radiographs, and oral surgery
• Digital X-rays
• Ultrasound
• In house laboratory testing
• Oxygen support and critical care
• And more

For now, we will primarily be seeing dogs and cats. We may have veterinarians working who have a special interest or experience in exotic animal medicine. When those doctors are scheduled, we’ll let everyone know that exotic appointments or emergencies may be available during those specific shifts.

At this time, we do not have any exotic focused shifts scheduled, so for now, please consider us a dogs and cats only hospital unless we announce otherwise.

Starting tomorrow, if your pet needs us, we’re here, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

🐾 Tips for Introducing a New Cat to Your Cat(s) 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈🐈‍⬛

1. GO SLOW
Rushing causes stress. A gradual intro can take days—or weeks—and that’s okay.

2. Start with separation
Keep the new cat in a separate room with their own food, litter, and bed.

3. Scent swap first
Exchange bedding or gently rub each cat with the same towel so they learn each other’s smell.

4. Feed near the door
Feed both cats on opposite sides of the closed door to create positive associations.

5. Use a barrier
Let them see each other through a baby gate or cracked door before full access.

6. Short, supervised meetings
Keep early interactions brief and calm. End on a positive note.

7. Watch body language
Hissing = normal.
Growling, swatting, or stalking = slow things down!

8. Give each cat their own stuff
Separate food bowls, litter boxes, scratching posts, and safe spaces reduce tension.

9. Don’t force friendship
Some cats coexist peacefully rather than cuddle—and that’s success!

10. Be patient
Progress isn’t always linear. Take a step back if needed.

Please don't make this mistake! 😢

We had a young German Shepherd rushed into our hospital just yesterday for heat stroke after being left in his owner's car for a short time. Tragically, this dog was already deceased by the time he got to us. 💔😥

Most recent statistics show 500+ HEARTWORM (+) dogs in NY, and those are just reported cases! That's the highest incidence range possible, so this disease is no longer just a southern problem. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. 💔

Super important warning from one of our clients regarding XYLITOL as an ingredient in some baby wipes. Most of you know by now that xylitol is HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs, but this is an odd product to find it in. (Apparently xylitol has humectant properties in addition to being an artificial sweetener.)
