Neglect! Ladies and gentlemen.... through the course of 4-5 years, we’ve come across some pretty extreme cases of severely matted pups, extremely long nails, insufficient/inadequate dental care, etc... proper care begins with at home with dog owners. Not pups miraculously grooming themselves or once in a blue moon when a grooming appointment is scheduled.
If Fuzzy Muzzle recommends a summercut/shave down (coat removal in medical terms, short hair NOT skin), it is strictly for the benefit of the pup. It is the humane way of doing things. There is no need for unnecessary pain and discomfort due matt removal on pups or allowing nail to grow to the point of abnormal growth. Adequate brushing/combing provide circulation through your pups coat. The more severe matting gets the less air circulation, larger amounts of bacteria are present in matts, more irritated skin, with a increased potential for infection and/or skin conditions.
We could go on and on. Ask your vet or pick up a book on dermatology. Ask your groomer questions. They should be CERTIFIED and fully understand the risk of the aforementioned conditions.
Pups comfort 1st priority and looks come after that.
1. Schedule yearly teeth cleaning with your vet and stay on top of regular dental care in between that time
2. Brush and/or comb your pups regularly. Specially if you have a breed(s) with drop coats, double coats, and short coats. (Smooth coats include boxers, pit bulls, etc.)
This will also help you identify skin conditions, new growth, and any issues you may need to address during a vet visit
Below are some examples of some extreme scenarios we’ve come across:
