DID YOU KNOW? Bearded Dragons can be surprisingly good at hiding signs of illness. By the time symptoms become obvious, a health problem may have already progressed.

5 THINGS EVERY BEARDED DRAGON OWNER SHOULD KNOW:

▪️UVB Lighting Is Essential: Without proper UVB exposure, Bearded Dragons can develop Metabolic Bone Disease, a serious condition that weakens their bones.

BIG PATIENTS. BIG HEARTS. EXCEPTIONAL TEAMWORK.

Not every patient fits neatly on an exam table! At Windward Animal Hospital, we care for patients of all shapes, sizes, and species, and sometimes that means getting a little creative!

This handsome 150-pound pig recently visited our hospital for a neuter procedure, and as you can imagine, working with a patient this size requires more than just veterinary expertise. It takes teamwork, careful planning, and a whole lot of coordination!

Unlike dogs and cats, pigs present some unique challenges when it comes to anesthesia, positioning, handling, and surgical procedures. Their size, strength, and anatomy require special consideration to ensure everything goes as smoothly and safely as possible.

That's where teamwork makes all the difference!

From safely maneuvering our hefty patient onto the surgical table to assisting with anesthesia, surgery, and recovery, our veterinary team worked together to provide the attentive, professional care he deserved.

DID YOU KNOW? Neutering male pigs can help reduce hormone-driven behaviors, including aggression, mounting, and territorial marking. It also eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and prevents unwanted breeding.

Windward Animal Hospital hosts a Low-Cost Rabbit Spay & Neuter Day designed specifically for rabbit owners who want experienced veterinary care at a more affordable cost.

Dr. Stewart Colby has worked extensively with rabbits throughout Georgia, including alongside the Georgia House Rabbit Society, and our special surgery days allow our team to care for many rabbits in a single day while following a carefully organized surgical and recovery process.

Spaying and neutering can help prevent unwanted litters, reduce certain hormone-related behaviors, and provide important long-term health benefits for your rabbit.

Because these are special scheduled surgery days, space is limited and advance registration is required.

Pet birds can be incredibly intelligent, curious, social, and surprisingly opinionated. Many learn routines, recognize their favorite people, solve problems, mimic sounds, and make it VERY clear when they approve — or disapprove — of something.

Keeping those busy little brains entertained is an important part of having a happy bird. Toys, foraging activities, interaction, climbing opportunities, and switching up their environment can all help keep life interesting.

Pet rats may be tiny, but their personalities are anything but! 🐀❤️ These smart, social, affectionate little companions need veterinary care just like our dogs and cats do.

Some health concerns we commonly see in pet rats include:
• Respiratory problems
• Lumps and masses
• Skin conditions and parasites
• Dental issues
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Mobility changes as they get older

Rats are also very good at hiding when they don’t feel well, so subtle changes in breathing, appetite, activity level, or behavior are worth paying attention to.

One of our adorable guinea pig patients stopped by Windward Animal Hospital for a recheck today, and of course we had to grab a picture!

Recheck visits are an important part of making sure our patients are progressing as expected. Depending on the reason for the original visit, our veterinary team may reassess things such as weight, appetite, activity level, healing, medication response, and any changes noticed at home.

Guinea pigs can be especially good at hiding when something isn’t quite right, so keeping an eye on their normal eating habits, behavior, and bathroom habits is important.

And yes — we absolutely love seeing our small and exotic patients come through the door.
