At home recovery is an important part of ❤️🩹 Here are a few ways you can help your pet recover safely:
🏠 Create a quiet recovery space: Keep them comfortable and away from excessive activity, stairs, and other pets if needed.
🚫 Restrict activity: Even if they seem like they feel better, running, jumping, and rough play can put stress on the surgical site and delay healing. Follow your veterinarian’s specific activity restrictions.
💊 Stay on schedule with medications: Give all medications exactly as prescribed. Never give human pain medications unless specifically instructed by your veterinarian.
🩹 Protect the incision: Keep the incision clean and dry, and prevent licking or chewing with an e-collar or recovery suit if recommended.
👀 Check the incision daily: Mild redness or swelling can be normal, but increasing redness, significant swelling, bleeding, discharge, an opening incision, or a foul odor should be reported to your veterinary team.
🍽️ Monitor eating, drinking & bathroom habits: Changes can happen after anesthesia, but persistent vomiting, refusal to eat or drink, difficulty urinating, or other concerning changes warrant a call to your veterinarian.
❤️ Let them rest: Healing takes energy! Give them plenty of time to sleep and recover, even when they start acting like their normal selves again.
When in doubt, give us a call. We would much rather answer a question early than have a small concern become a bigger problem. 🐶🐱
