Carbon County Friends of Animals We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1997 to provide a safe haven for unwanted cats.

Our mission is to offer shelter, care, and compassion to cats who have been abandoned, neglected, or mistreated, giving them a second chance at finding loving homes.

“Psst. Hey you. I’m not the bad guy.” 🖤🐾

Atlas would like to have a word about black cats.

Somewhere along the way, black cats got stuck with a pretty lousy reputation.

Bad luck. Witches. Omens.

Atlas would like to formally object.

In fact, depending on where you are in the world, black cats have been considered good luck.

In Japan, encountering a black cat can be lucky. In British folklore, black cats have long been associated with good fortune. An old Scottish belief says a black cat arriving at your home can mean prosperity. And in southern France, folklore told of special black cats called matagots that could bring good fortune when treated well.

So maybe black cats have been victims of some very bad public relations. 😸

Because there is nothing unlucky about a black cat.

They are goofy.
They are affectionate.
They are mischievous.
They are beautiful.

And they are every bit as deserving of a loving home as any other cat.

Atlas certainly isn't the bad guy.

He's just a black cat staring into the camera wondering why hoomans have been making up weird stories about him for hundreds of years.

So the next time a black cat crosses your path, maybe don't worry about your luck.

Maybe stop and say hello. 🖤

And if that black cat happens to be waiting for a home at a shelter?

You might just get very lucky indeed.

🤍 Some cats demand to be noticed. Louise waits quietly. 🤍

Louise is the kind of cat who can be easily overlooked in a busy shelter room. She does not push her way to the front or compete for attention. She simply waits, calm and sweet, for someone to slow down long enough to see her.

And once you do, you will discover a beautiful 3-year-old girl who is as soft as a bunny and wonderfully affectionate.

Louise arrived at Carbon County Friends of Animals with her sister, McHoney, and their friend Sally. She has now been waiting for a home for 13 weeks.

Louise is spayed, dewormed, and up to date on her rabies and distemper vaccinations. She will also be microchipped upon adoption.

During our ongoing adoption special, Louise’s adoption fee is just $100.

🐾 Professional companion and second-best spider hunter. 🐾

Clancy is a playful, affectionate 3-year-old boy who has been waiting at Carbon County Friends of Animals for nine weeks. As you can see from his visit with staff member Mick, Clancy is perfectly happy to settle into someone’s arms and enjoy a little attention.

He also has skills.

Clancy is currently ranked as the shelter’s second-best spider hunter. Priscilla continues to hold the number-one spot, but there is no shame in being runner-up to a legend.

More than anything, Clancy is a companion cat. He will do best with someone who wants a playful friend nearby: one who will share affection, join in the fun, and occasionally dispose of the remains of any eight-legged intruders.

Clancy is neutered, dewormed, and up to date on his rabies and distemper vaccinations. He will also be microchipped upon adoption.

🕷️ Afraid of spiders? Priscilla would like a job. 🕷️

Priscilla’s spider-killing skills are legendary. This watchful young lady takes home security seriously, and she is prepared to guard and protect in exchange for a very reasonable compensation package: food, love, and plenty of snuggles.

Priscilla is just 1 year old, but she has already spent six months at Carbon County Friends of Animals.

She is beautiful, friendly, curious, and always keeping an eye on her surroundings. What she needs now is a home of her own and someone who will appreciate both her affectionate nature and her highly specialized pest-control experience.

🖤 Meet Atlas, a companion cat through and through. 🖤

Atlas is a beautiful 2-year-old black cat with a curious mind and an affectionate heart. He does not want to watch life from the sidelines.

Whatever his person is doing, Atlas would like an invitation to join in.

This friendly young man recently developed a cyst on his back leg. Fortunately, one of the veterinarians who works with Carbon County Friends of Animals was able to operate and remove it.

Atlas has recovered, although the surgery left behind a scar that gives him a distinctive, one-of-a-kind look.

Atlas is searching for more than a place to live. He wants a person to follow, spend time with, and accompany through the little activities that make up each day.

Not Every Cat Knows How to Ask for Love ❤️🐾

Meet Taco.

Taco is only 18 weeks old, but he has already had a lot of change in his little life.

He started out as a TNR kitten. At first, everyone thought he was feral.

But Taco wasn’t really wild.

He was scared.
Very, very scared.

With time in a foster home, something became clear: Taco actually loves affection. He likes to be pet. He likes when someone talks softly to him. He wants that closeness.

He just doesn’t know how to ask for it yet.

Now Taco is at the shelter, waiting for his forever home, and once again everything is new. New room. New cats. New people. New sounds.

So Taco does what frightened little cats often do.
He hides.

Finding him in the kitten room can sometimes feel like a game of “Where’s Taco?” because this little boy has become remarkably good at finding the best hiding places. 😸

But when you find him, and you sit with him, and you give him a little time, there is a sweet kitten underneath all that fear who wants to be loved.

That is something important to remember when visiting a shelter.

Not every cat will run up to greet you.
Not every cat will climb into your lap.
Not every cat knows how to say, “Please pick me.”

Some of them are watching from a hiding place, hoping you will notice them anyway.

Taco doesn’t need someone who expects him to be brave on the first day.

He needs someone willing to show him that he doesn’t have to be scared anymore.

Because sometimes the cat hiding from you is the very same cat who is quietly hoping you’ll stay. ❤️

ADOPTED!!!!

💛 This is Holly. She survived. Now she needs a home. 💛

Thirteen-year-old Holly and her sister arrived at Carbon County Friends of Animals in dire condition. Both were filthy, severely matted, and undernourished.

Sadly, Holly’s sister did not survive.

Holly did.

She was shaved, gently cleaned, and given the medical care she desperately needed. Her soft coat is still growing back, but Holly is now healthy enough to begin looking for her last and forever home.

Despite everything she has endured, Holly is extraordinarily affectionate. Taking her pictures was nearly impossible because she had no interest in posing. She only wanted to be petted.

Holly deserves more than simply surviving. She deserves a warm place to sleep, gentle hands, and someone who will make the rest of her life the best part of it.

As a senior cat, Holly’s adoption fee is only $50.
