Delta’s finally getting more freedom 👏

We’ve been working on her off-leash reliability and conditioning the e-collar along the way. Is it absolutely necessary? No. But it can be a really helpful tool when used and conditioned properly.

What do you think - can a dog be reliably off-leash without an e-collar?

What some might see as “resource guarding” was really just a dog unsure how to feel when someone approached something he valued.

Instead of only teaching “drop it,” we focused on changing the emotional response.

What we did (after building a relationship):

1. Created movement around him without trying to take the toy (light possession game)
2. If he lost it, we gave it right back
3. Repeated until he stopped seeing us as a threat

At first, Rory was tense and defensive. But after ten mins, he started to relax and could stay calm even with us near his toy.

Eventually, it turned into a game for him - he could engage instead of guard.

That’s the difference between managing behavior and changing how a dog feels.

Important note: this is not something we recommend trying on your own. Work like this should be done with an experienced trainer, especially with dogs showing serious guarding behavior.

Part 2 of 3: Rory’s dog reactivity

In Part 1, we focused on building trust with people. Now it was time to address how Rory felt and acted around other dogs.

Rory’s reactivity was rooted in insecurity. Our goal wasn’t to force interactions or make him “love” every dog. But we wanted to help him feel more confident and become neutral.

That meant giving him controlled exposure to other dogs. With exposure comes opportunities to make mistakes, and that’s ok. Each moment gave us a chance to guide him toward a better decision. When needed, we interrupted and corrected unwanted behaviors while reinforcing calm, neutral choices.

You asked for the process… we listened.

Part 1 of 3 of Rory’s training journey.

When Rory came to us, he was highly reactive to people and wouldn’t allow handling. Before we could work on obedience, leash skills, or dog reactivity, we first had to help him become more comfortable with people entering his space.

As Rory relaxed and gained confidence, we gradually introduced more handling and continued building from there. That foundation allowed us to move on to the other pieces of his training.

Recall Tip💡

Don’t just practice recall from a sit-stay. Practice it when your dog is actually interested in something else.

The goal is to gradually work through higher states of arousal like food, toys, other dogs, or anything they shouldn’t be getting into because that’s when we’re usually recalling our dogs.

As you’re working through those challenges, you’ll need a way to get your dog back consistently. A long lead or a properly conditioned e-collar can help you build reliability while giving your dog the freedom to practice.

Meet Rory

Rory (4-years old) is currently in our Day Train program to work through his reactivity toward both people and dogs.

Before we could even begin addressing the dog reactivity, we had to address the human reactivity first. Without that foundation, there was no way to safely and effectively progress to the next step.

This is how he started… and this is how it’s going.
