RL Performance Horses LLC Ryan & Timi Lickley
Barrel & rope horse specialists building proven winners
30+ yrs training performance horses

Ryan & Timi Lickley | RL Performance Horses | Jerome, ID

For over 30 years, Ryan and Timi have trained top-quality performance horses together. They’ve developed a training program that produces proven barrel and rope horses that go on to win at futurities, amateur finals, circuit finals, and even the NFR. Their brand is trusted across the country by riders of every level because they approach training each horse from a personal, individualized perspective.

• Timi focuses on barrel horse training, primarily preparing and selling futurity horses. She also provides rider clinics, helping horses and riders build solid foundations and refine their skills.

• Ryan specializes in rope horses, starting them working on the ranch: gathering, doctoring, sorting, branding — before refining them in the arena. They pride themselves on creating horses that are sound, seasoned, and ready to win. Whether it’s in selling a horse or personalized training, the goal is always the same: to help each horse become the best athlete it can be, and to help each rider chase their dreams with confidence.

This summer, Sagelie Walchli came to Idaho to work for Timi. Now, she’s taking on a bigger role in our program! 🤎

Sagelie did so much during her time working for us this summer, from painting fence to treating horses and everything in between. Since she proved to be such great help and was super handy with the horses, Timi & Ryan wanted to offer Sagelie an opportunity to learn even more.

In 2027, we’ll start collaborating on training one of our current 2-year-olds with Sagelie! Timi will finish out this year’s training with Peach (BR Royal Sirocco), then take her to Arizona where Sagelie and Buffy Walchli will continue preparing her to sell as a futurity prospect. 🍑We’re excited to work with a talented young trainer like Sagelie, and we can’t wait to see how Peach grows under her guidance!

We’ll keep everyone updated on Peach’s progress with Sagelie as she continues her training. Follow our page so you don’t miss a thing!

You put tassels WHERE?! ☎️🤣

Whether it’s someone calling for advice or just to chat, we never know what to expect when the phone rings while we’re out in the arena. Ryan likes to say that Timi is basically an over-the-phone therapist at this point! And when Opal (LUNAR MEDIA PDX) is here, she loves getting to listen in on some of the wild conversations that Timi has while she’s working. 😅

What’s the craziest phone call you’ve gotten while working with your horses? Tell us in the comments! 💬

Welcome to the final part of our September c**t starting series! 🐎

To close out this series, we’re talking about introducing c**ts to new bits during their training. In our first video on bits earlier this month, Timi explained how she transitions c**ts from a loping halter to a full bit — and this week Timi is showing what testing a new bit with one of these babies actually looks like!

We don’t typically start trying out new bits until our c**ts have gotten used to being bitted up regularly. They get to work in a wide variety of new bits during their 3-year-old year, as Timi is actively looking to find what bits feel best for each individual horse. This was Stevie’s (EdgeOfSeventeen) first time in this bit, and we think she did pretty great! 🫶

What did you think of our c**t starting series? Do you want to see more series like this on our page? Let us know your opinion in the comments!

Snoop might need a bigger size cinch after all! 🤣

Earlier this year, Snoop was turned out with our other 2-year-olds — and he got REALLY chubby! Once competition season started winding down, we brought the c**ts up to the barn to resume their training. When we filmed this, Snoop had just come off the pasture, and he had to “suck it in” to fit in his cinch for a few weeks!

By the time August rolled around, Snoop was back to looking fit and muscular. At the end of the month, Buffy Walchli decided to buy him from us to train in her program and futurity! We’re so excited to see where Snoop goes under Buffy’s expert guidance. 🤎

Follow our page to keep up with Snoop and all our other c**ts!

Shelley Riggs asked us how Timi adds speed to young horses. Let’s talk about it! 💬

It may surprise some folks to learn that Timi NEVER uses her legs to ask for speed in a run. When it comes to speed, we train all of our babies to go off of our voices and a few specific sounds we make to them:

🐔 Clucking for a trot

💋 Smooching for a lope

✋ “Whoa” to stop

Once we’re ready to increase speed, Timi will use her voice to prompt her horse to move faster. If the horse doesn’t respond, a light tap with her over-and-under is all she needs to get them moving correctly. Once a young horse has this connection down, we’ll start incorporating these vocal prompts into other drills in the arena.

Now that you’ve heard Timi’s response, we want to hear yours! Tell us how you ask your horses for speed in the comments below. ⬇️

What do you want to see next from RL Performance Horses? 💭

Next month marks 1 year since we started posting on this page, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the little community we’ve built here! We have covered a lot of different topics during the last year, from c**t starting and tack preferences, to feeding routines and travel tips. Timi has gained so much wisdom over her 30+ year career, and we love getting to share those nuggets of wisdom with all of you!

We’re filming some new content with Opal Luna • LUNAR MEDIA this week, and we want to know what you want to see next from us. If there’s a question you’ve been dying to ask Timi, or a technique you want to see broken down further — tell us in the comments below! 👇

Welcome to part 3 of our September c**t starting series! This week we’re focusing on our 3-year-olds. 🐴

Our c**ts evolve quickly in their training, and are much further along by the time they turn 3. Our current 3-year-olds, Helena (Flash N Dash Millie) and Stevie (EdgeOfSeventeen), are especially advanced for their age. In this video, Timi is demonstrating how groundwork changes in the third year of training, and what her expectations are as she’s working with Stevie.

Come back next week for the final episode of our c**t starting series, where Timi will show how she introduces new bits to the 3-year-olds. Follow us so you don’t miss it! 🫶

Adele (RL RollingInTheDeep) can’t stand flies — but she hates fly spray even more! 🪰😱

Most of our horses outgrow their fear of fly spray eventually, but Miss Adele never has. She doesn’t hang back when we spray her, but she pins her ears and pouts the entire time. Her full sister Aretha (RESPECT) doesn’t mind it at all, and they’re the same age! 😂 It’s always funny to see how different their personalities are as they develop, especially with full siblings.

Adele is still in recovery with sharpsportsmedicine after her injury early this summer, and her wound is looking better every day! We had hoped to have her back in training sooner, but we’re glad she’s taking the time she needs to heal and come back at 100%. ❤️‍🩹

Follow our page to keep up with Adele as she heals up and returns to training!

Bits aren’t one size fits all! It takes trying all kinds of different bits to find the one your horse is most responsive to.👇

If you saw part 1 of this video last week, you know we love to use a wide variety of bits on our horses. Now, Timi is sharing some of the specialized roping bits she uses with horses that respond best to pressure in different areas of the mouth. Watch until the end to find out which bits she prefers for training versus competing!

Have you tried any of these bits with your barrel horses before? Tell us about your favorites in the comments! 💬

Who needs therapy when you spend your days working with horses? 🤎

Everyone knows we love our horses like they’re our kids, but we rarely talk about how much we lean on them for emotional support. Even when we have tough days, nothing makes us happier than getting to love on the babies or work with our open horses! So often, our horses mirror our internal struggles back at us, and help us to be patient with ourselves while working through those difficult emotions.

Does your horse double as your therapist too? Tell us how your horses have helped improve your mental health in the comments! 💬👇
