🐾 Hand Stripping vs. Shaving an Airedale 🐾
Have you ever wondered why Airedales are traditionally hand stripped instead of shaved?
An Airedale has a double coat. The outer coat is coarse, wiry, and richly colored, while the undercoat is softer and helps provide insulation.
Hand stripping removes the mature, dead outer hairs by gently pulling them in the direction of growth. When done correctly on a ready coat, it should not hurt the dog. This allows a fresh, richly colored, wiry coat to grow in and helps maintain the classic Airedale appearance.
Shaving or clipping cuts the hair off at the surface instead of removing it from the root. Over time, repeated clipping may cause the coat to become softer, lighter, curlier, or less weather resistant. The black saddle may also gradually fade to gray.
Benefits of hand stripping include:
🐾 Preserving the rich black and tan coloring
🐾 Maintaining the firm, wiry texture
🐾 Supporting the coat’s natural weather resistance
🐾 Reducing loose, dead hair
🐾 Keeping the traditional Airedale outline
Hand stripping requires more time and skill than clipping, but it is the best grooming method for preserving the natural qualities of an Airedale’s coat.
Clipping can still be a practical choice for some companion dogs, especially older dogs or families who prefer easier coat maintenance. The right choice depends on the dog, the condition of the coat, and the family’s goals.
At Skyfall Airedales, we believe owners should understand their Airedale’s unique coat so they can make the grooming choice that works best for their dog and lifestyle. ❤️
