PET SUPERMARKET STUART, FL YOU GET A GOLD STAR!

Okay, I spend A LOT of time calling out pet stores when they give out bad information about aquatic animals.
(L👀king at you Petco!)

So when I see someone doing it RIGHT, I’m going to give them credit!

I spotted this sign at Pet Supermarket explaining something SO important about leopard puffers:

As juveniles, they can be kept in freshwater. But as they grow, they need to be converted to brackish/saltwater conditions.

And honestly? THANK YOU.

This is exactly the kind of information customers need BEFORE they bring an animal home.

Leopard puffers aren’t a “buy a cute little freshwater fish and forget about it” situation. Their care requirements change as they mature, and customers need to know that BEFORE making the purchase.

So Pet Supermarket… today, you get applause. 👏👏👏

Keep putting the correct information in front of your customers.

We can call out the bad stuff when we see it, but we should absolutely celebrate the good stuff too! I am always impressed with the care team at my local Pet Supermarket in Stuart, Florida!

Attention: Petco is housing axolotls on gravel and in temperatures well above 70 degrees! Some stores are keeping them in the “plants” tank. It is unknown if those plants are treated with fertilizers. Other stores have them housed with snails. Consider writing or calling the corporate office to let them know if your local Petco is not caring for axolotls properly.

Today I visited my local Petco and was shocked to see how axolotls are being marketed and displayed.

The display included:
Aquarium, gravel , which can cause fatal intestinal impactions if swallowed.

Snails, which are not appropriate tank mates and can also create an impaction risk if ingested.

Displayed in the Aquatic plants tank that may have been exposed to fertilizers or pesticides before sale and should never be assumed safe without proper preparation.

Water temperatures that appeared to be well above the recommended maximum of 68°F. Axolotls are cold-water amphibians, and prolonged exposure to warmer temperatures can cause significant stress, illness, and increase the risk of infection.

The biggest problem is that new owners trust pet stores. If these products are displayed with an axolotl, many people will assume they’re appropriate, when they may not be.

As an ethical axolotl breeder, I spend countless hours educating new keepers because proper husbandry truly matters. These amazing animals deserve to thrive, not simply survive.

Please consider purchasing your axolotl from a responsible, ethical breeder who prioritizes health, genetics, and education over sales.

If you share my concerns, I encourage you to respectfully contact Petco Corporate and ask them to improve their axolotl husbandry standards, including proper water temperatures, appropriate substrates, and accurate care recommendations.

Together, our voices can help prevent unnecessary suffering and ensure future axolotl owners receive the information they need to care for these incredible animals properly.

This is so infuriating! We need to address some concerning misinformation being shared online regarding an axolotl named “Lefty.”

Lefty was not abandoned or “found.” This animal was legally acquired through an auction and has been in known, documented and excellent care by fellow axolotl keeper Hypnotic Exotics ZTX. Lefty is also uniquely identifiable due to being born without gills on one side, making misidentification very unlikely.

While we understand that storytelling can drive engagement online, it is important that content shared about animals is accurate......especially when it involves claims of neglect or abandonment. Bass Fishing Productions is lying for views. While creating his "content," Lefty was subjected to horrible conditions just to set a stage for this false content.

Spreading incorrect information not only misrepresents the animal’s history, it also undermines responsible keepers and breeders who prioritize proper care and transparency. Subjecting animals to improper conditions just to get views is disgusting and wrong.
