What is a Registered Veterinary Technician?

An RVT or “vet tech” is a veterinary professional who works directly under a veterinarian. To become of vet tech, you typically need to earn an associate’s degree in Applied Science/Veterinary Technology. Two years of pre-requisite classes (including biology, zoology and chemistry) plus another two years of dedicated veterinary technology classes (large and small animal nursing, microbiology, radiology, pharmacology…..and more!)

Some of a Vet Tech’s daily duties include:
• Patient care: Obtaining vitals, providing nursing care, and administering first aid or even CPR
• Medical procedures: Assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, and performing dental procedures
• Diagnostic tests: Drawing blood, performing X-rays , ultrasounds, and analyzing laboratory samples such as blood smears, ear swabs, urinalysis or stool samples
• Educating owners: Advising animal owners on many different subjects like medications, disease processes, dietary needs etc…

Vet techs work in a variety of settings, including specialty animal hospitals, general practice clinics, and research facilities. They are often compared to registered nurses in human medicine.
