Only in New Orleans does a 5K start with a brass band. 🎺

Race to the Rescue is today, and Team Ark is walking, running, and generally taking our time through the oaks at Metairie Cemetery with a lot of very happy dogs. It finishes with the Blessing of the Pets, which never stops being our favorite part.

Every dollar raised goes to no-kill rescues right here in Greater New Orleans.

Here's the part most pet parents don't hear until much later: the best time for a first dental cleaning is before anything is wrong. 🦷

Around 18 months to 2 years, those teeth are still in good shape. A cleaning at that age is simply maintenance — plaque and tartar removed above and below the gum line, dental x-rays to check what we can't see, a polish, and a full look at the whole mouth. Usually no extractions. No long recovery. A much smaller invoice.

It belongs on the list right alongside the vaccines and the spay or neuter.

Your pet can't tell you when something feels a little off. They just get quieter, sleep a bit more, take the stairs a little slower — and we chalk it up to age. 🍂

A yearly exam catches the things that hide well: dental disease, early kidney changes, a heart murmur, a lump you hadn't found yet. Almost all of it is gentler on them when we find it early.

Rabies is one of the few diseases that's almost always fatal once symptoms appear, in animals and people alike. It's still out there in wildlife across the country, bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, which is exactly why the vaccine is required for pets in most states. 💉

Take two minutes this week to check their records and make sure it's current. And if your pet ever tangles with wildlife, call us right away, even if the wound looks like nothing.

A vaccine they'll never remember. A danger they'll never meet. 🤍

Happy 6th Ark Anniversary, Renee! 🧡🐾

For six years, Renee has been such an important part of our Ark family! You’ll most often find her working alongside Dr. Vennen, but she can jump onto any team and keep things moving like she’s been there all day.

She also has a serious love for grooming ✂️🐶 and continues to grow her skills in an area she’s already pretty amazing at!

And, of course, we can’t celebrate Renee without mentioning the jokes. 😂 She keeps us laughing, keeps the days interesting, and brings so much personality to our team.
