Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation - Promoting the Health and Welfare of Missouri's Animals since 1975. "People Helping Animals, Animals Helping People"

As a public charity, that supports the charitable and educational purposes and activities of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF) focuses on public education and animal welfare issues to further the health of animals in Missouri. The Foundation board is comprised of members who work closely with the leadership of the MVMA on activities and issues of mutual concern. The Foundation plans and implements many new outreach programs including public education events and activities dedicated to the relationship between people and animals. As part of its overall public education efforts, the Foundation will continue to develop and enhance the veterinary museum as a tool to teach the general public about the profession and about the history of animal health care. In addition, the Foundation has expanded it's presence to the internet with an informative web-site, and pet memorial program at www.mopetmemorial.com.

Jefferson City is home to the first museum in the United States dedicated entirely to the history of veterinary medicine, and it is exactly as strange and wonderful as that sounds. 🐾

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation Museum holds a collection that includes preserved hairballs you're actually encouraged to touch, a whalebone, jars of assorted animal specimens, and a rotating array of antique medical instruments once used on everything from horses to household pets. It's a small, unassuming museum, the kind of place that could easily be missed entirely if you weren't specifically looking for it, but it draws a steady trickle of curious visitors who leave saying it was stranger and more interesting than they expected. Veterinarians from around the state have contributed to the collection over the years, treating it less like a novelty and more like a genuine record of how far animal medicine has come.

Missouri has an oddly deep bench of specialty museums built around subjects most states never think to preserve, and this might be one of the strangest of the bunch. 🦴

What's the most unexpectedly interesting small museum you've ever stumbled into?

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Ronald G. Wade, the last living founding member of the MVMF Board of Directors.
As one of the MVMF's original board members, Dr. Wade helped establish the vision and mission that continues to guide our work at the foundation and museum today.
We extend our condolences to Dr. Wade's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation was founded in 1975 by Dr. Ronald G. Wade, Dr. Ernest E. Burgess, Dr. William R. Henry, Dr. Gerald L. Johnson, Dr. Richard F. Taylor, Dr. Leroy N . Atkinson, Dr. William F. Bryson, Dr. Robert E. Hertzog, Dr. John M. Perry, and C.M. (Jack) Kroeck.
