Let’s be clear: if you have a dog who genuinely enjoys the cafe, that is wonderful! There is absolutely no problem taking them along.

But we should talk about the modern expectation that a dog’s best day involves tagging along for an oat milk latte. Out of love, we often bring them into loud, busy, overstimulating environments, hoping they'll have fun. When they seem stressed or shut down, we comfort ourselves by thinking, "Well, at least they’re getting out of the house!"

It’s eye-opening when you think about it. Not that many generations ago, these dogs - even if they weren't actively working livestock - lived much quieter, simpler lives. They had space, clarity, and biological fulfillment (either through work or just as a dog), rather than constant urban sensory overload.

When we take an animal engineered for movement, wide spaces, and sharp focus, and place it into a highly constrained environment, that hardwired energy doesn't disappear. It can easily bottle up and turn into anxiety, frustration, or reactivity.

It's so natural for us to assume our dogs share our idea of a "good time." But your herding dog doesn't just want to sit still and watch the world go by. They want a purpose.

If you really want to get them out of the house and see them light up, give them what their genetics are actually asking for - like structured play, movement, and an outlet for their drive.

The greatest gift you can give your dog (who doesn't want to go everywhere) isn't bringing them everywhere you go.

It's understanding who they actually are.

When hiring a dog trainer, there are several important questions every pet owner should ask. What certifications does the trainer have, and how many years of experience do they have?
A knowledgeable trainer should also continue their education each year to stay current on training methods, behavior, and canine science.

Ask if the trainer can show videos of their results with dogs they have trained—not just promotional videos, but real examples of their work.
Another great question is whether they can show their own well-trained dogs as examples of the training they provide.
A trainer’s knowledge, experience, continued education, proven results, and ability to demonstrate their own training skills can tell you a lot about whether they are the right person to trust with your dog.
