Meet the New World screwworm detector dogs! ๐Ÿพ

Trained at USDAโ€™s National Detector Dog Training Center in Georgia, these highly skilled canine teams are stationed at the Douglas, AZ port of entry to inspect livestock for signs of New World screwworm (NWS).

These USDA detector dogs arenโ€™t generalists or law enforcement - NWS detection is their sole focus. Their specialized training prepares them to work alongside USDA veterinarians at the southern border, providing an extra layer of protection for livestock as cattle trade resumes.

Itโ€™s never easy to say goodbye but it is time to say goodbye to Tim, one of the MU mules. Tim, you did amazing things with your pal, Terry.
He will be missed by many and our hearts go out to those closest to him over the years.
Run wild my friend. ๏ฟผTim Mule

This week, we had to say goodbye to a beloved member of the family. ๐Ÿ’›

Tim, one of our longtime Mizzou mules, was humanely euthanized at age 33 following a decline in his health and quality of life.

Tim arrived at the CVM with his longtime teammate, Terry, in 2003. For nearly two decades, the pair represented the university at events across Missouri, meeting countless people along the way. They retired in 2020 and have spent the past few years enjoying quieter days in the pasture, visits from friends and, of course, plenty of treats.

Weโ€™re grateful for the 23 years Tim spent with us and for every person who helped make them good ones. He will be deeply missed.

MVMA Week Recap
What a busy and productive week for MVMA! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿพ
Weโ€™ve had the opportunity to connect with members, students, veterinarians, and supporters across several important events and activities:

๐ŸŽก Visited with members at the shared MVMA and MU CVM booth at the Missouri State Fair booth
๐Ÿฅž Attended the Governorโ€™s Breakfast at the Missouri State Fairgrounds
๐ŸŽ“ Welcomed the incoming class of 2030 with food and veterinarian connections during V.E.T. Orientation Week
๐Ÿ“– Took part in a Task Force meeting
๐ŸŽ“ Welcomed the MU College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2030 during the 2nd Annual Convocation Ceremony

Itโ€™s been a full week, but a great reminder of the strength of Missouriโ€™s veterinary community and the importance of supporting the next generation of veterinarians.
A huge thank you to all of our volunteer MVMA members who gave their time, energy, and expertise throughout the week. We couldnโ€™t do it without you! Your commitment to MVMA and to the veterinary profession is truly appreciated. โค๏ธ

We captured lots of great moments along the wayโ€”here are a few highlights from a very busy MVMA week!

With summer temperatures soaring across Missouri, it's important to remember that the heat can be dangerous for our pets, too. โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ

MVMA member Dr. Phil Brown owner of Animal Care Center of Springfield, MO recently spoke with KY3 about the risks of heat stroke and paw pad burns during extreme temperatures. His advice is simple:
๐Ÿถ Walk pets during the cooler morning or evening hours.
๐Ÿพ Test the pavement with the back of your handโ€”if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet.
๐Ÿ’ง Always provide plenty of fresh water and shade.
๐Ÿšจ Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, or difficulty breathing.

Thank you, Dr. Brown, for helping educate pet owners and keep Missouri's pets safe this summer!

Nick Kelly spoke with a local veterinarian about how pet owners can stay proactive in the summer heat.
