A knowledgeable trainer sees the equipment, handling, language, and imagery and immediately starts asking questions. A typical pet owner often sees:

Positive Reinforcement
Expert Dog Training
Individualized Training Plans
Building Confidence
Compassionate, Experienced Animal Lovers

…and stops there.

Don't just read the words. Decode the whole advertisement.

Because words can describe an approach—but the pictures, equipment, services, and terminology tell you much more about what is actually being offered.

“Positive reinforcement” is not the same thing as “force-free.”

What equipment is visible in the training photographs?
🔎 Flat collar?
🔎 Harness?
🔎 Head halter?
🔎 Long line?
🔎 Slip lead?
🔎 Prong collar?
🔎 E-collar?
🔎 Leash corrections?
🔎 Other training equipment?

If an advertisement says ‘positive reinforcement,’ but the photographs show equipment you weren't expecting, that's a reason to ask questions—not a reason to make assumptions.

🔎 Ask: “What happens when the dog gets it wrong?
Those answers reveal considerably more than the words “positive,” “balanced,” “compassionate,” or “science-based.”

Have you ever lost a slipper, a glove, a toy—or something else your dog might be able to help you find?

There’s a fascinating skill you can teach your dog called Match to Sample.

Your dog learns to look at a “sample” object and then identify the matching object from a selection of choices.

And yes… this is something Linda had to actually train and demonstrate as part of her DogNostics education.

🎓 Linda Ross, B.A. – Psychology, DN-DTC, FDM, FFCP, LSHC-S, earned the DogNostics Dog Trainer Certificate after completing the DogNostics Dog Trainer Certificate program.

The program isn't simply “watch some videos and get a certificate.”

It includes extensive coursework, knowledge assessments, homework, and practical skill assessments submitted on video. The program progresses through Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master levels, with the Master level requiring advanced practical skills and professional judgment.

Match to Sample was one of those advanced skills.

In fact, DogNostics specifically includes Match to Sample in its Master-level curriculum, alongside other advanced concepts such as concept training, modifiers, comparatives, quantifiers, social learning, and cognition.

So when you see a credential after a trainer's name, it's worth asking:

What did they actually have to DO to earn it?

Because there's a difference between completing a course…

…and demonstrating that you can actually apply what you learned.
