On my life

I'm not a violent person. I avoid confrontation. I'm the one who apologizes when someone else bumps into me. I'm soft-spoken, polite, generally peaceful. But there's a line. And that line is my dog. A neighbor kicked my dog once. ONCE. I don't remember walking over to his house. I don't remember what I said. But my husband told me later that I "became a completely different person" and that the neighbor "looked genuinely terrified." The neighbor moved three months later. Coincidence? Maybe. Here's what people don't understand: My dog is innocent. Helpless. Dependent on ME for protection. He can't defend himself. He can't fight back. He can't even understand WHY someone would hurt him. But I CAN fight back. And I WILL. You can insult me. You can be rude to me. You can treat ME badly and I'll probably just walk away. But hurt my dog? You just met a version of me that I didn't even know existed. A version that doesn't care about being polite or appropriate or "taking the high road." A version that will make you DEEPLY regret your choices. My dog trusts me to keep him safe. That's my JOB. My RESPONSIBILITY. And I take it VERY seriously. So fair warning: I seem chill. I seem easygoing. I seem like someone you can push around. But touch my dog and find out exactly how wrong you are. I dare you.
