🐾 CASE OF THE WEEK: When an “Ear Infection” Isn’t an Ear Infection 👂

This week’s case is a great reminder of why a thorough ear examination and ear cytology are so important!

This patient had been dealing with ongoing ear problems for months and had previously been treated for an ear infection at another veterinary clinic. Despite treatment, the problem continued.

When we examined the ear, we found something that made us take a closer look. 🔎

Ear cytology showed:
• Neutrophils and macrophages — inflammatory cells
• No bacteria or yeast identified

While inflammation was clearly present, the lack of infectious organisms on cytology made us question whether an infection was actually the primary problem.

During the ear examination, we noticed what appeared to be a foreign object deep within the ear canal. Because of its location, the owner elected to have the patient sedated for safe removal.

And what did we find?

🌱 A piece of mulch lodged deep in the ear canal!

Once the foreign material was removed, we had a much better explanation for why this ear had continued to be painful and inflamed despite months of treatment.

💡 The takeaway: Not every red, painful, or inflamed ear is caused by bacteria or yeast. Cytology helps us determine what is actually happening inside the ear, while a thorough otoscopic examination can help identify problems that medication alone can’t fix.

When an ear problem isn’t responding as expected, sometimes we need to look a little deeper. 👀🐶

As you drive by 1128 Allardt Hwy, you will notice our new signs went up over the past couple of days.

A big thank you to S&S Services and Crabtree Signs for helping bring our vision to life with our new signs.

We had an 💡 of what we wanted, and they made it happen. The signs turned out even better than we imagined, and we couldn’t be happier with the finished product. ♥️

We appreciate all the hard work and attention to detail that went into them. Thank you for being part of this exciting new chapter for us!

This week, we teased that something exciting is coming… and we’re excited to share a little more.

As our community continues to grow, so do we! We’re moving to a new location that will better serve the needs of our patients, clients, and the community we love.

Over the years, so many of you have shared your ideas about what you’d like to see from us. This new space gives us room to grow, and we’re committed to continuing to build a practice that meets the needs of our community.

🐾 Looking for Their Forever Homes! 🐾

These three adorable kittens are ready to find loving families! ❤️

We do want to be transparent that they are currently being treated for ringworm, a common fungal skin infection. While it’s very treatable, they will need to continue treatment at home until it’s resolved. Our team will provide instructions and answer any questions you may have to help make the process as easy as possible.

If you’re willing to give one of these sweet kittens a chance, you’ll be gaining a wonderful companion who just needs a little extra TLC to get off to the best start.
