In 2008, heartworm-positive dogs at ACPS had one outcome. A group of volunteers decided to change it.

In December 2025, the 5,000th dog crossed the line. 🐾

That’s 5,000 tails wagging in happy homes instead of being lost to a preventable disease. This isn't just a number; it’s a victory for every single person who supports our mission. Since 2009, FOJA has been 100% focused on providing the life-saving treatments that the city budget just can't cover.

Every single one of those survivors was made possible by donors like you. Because you showed up, they got to go home. 🏠💙

Sammie is one of the many faces of heartworm positive dogs that come into Animal Care & Protective Services. Everyone who spent time with this beautiful boy at the shelter and on his many ACPS Dog Day Out Crew outings knew what a special pup he was - staff and volunteers loved him. Unfortunately, Sammie had severe heartworm disease, which was so severe that rather than having Sammie do the regular back-to-back overnight treatment at the shelter, he was required to have split heartworm treatment done over three months. In partnership with ACPS, Kings Trail Animal Hospital sponsored and performed his treatment earlier this year. On Saturday a couple asked to take him out on DDO. Sammie seemed a little tired but he had a great day out with this family. So great that they brought him back from his DDO and decided to take him home to foster. Sammie went home with his family and had a great night. Sunday morning, he went into respiratory distress. Sammie was rushed back to the shelter. X-rays were immediately done and revealed significant changes to his lungs. Sammie was suffering. He had irreparable damage from having had severe heartworm disease. He wasn’t going to make it. The foster family, who had planned to adopt Sammie, was given the devastating news. Sadly, Sammie crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Sammie is a reminder to please give your dogs their monthly heartworm preventative. Such a simple and inexpensive way to avoid the disease and the damage it can cause. FOJA’s flagship program is to provide funding for heartworm treatment for ACPS shelter dogs - done both in-house and after adoption. She gets along with other dogs and loves participating in playgroup. She takes a bit to warm up to you but once she does, she loves to be by your side and give kisses.
