After a week of being called โcold,โ โnot compassionate,โ โunsympathetic,โ and being told that we โonly care about moneyโ by several pet owners, we wanted to remind everyone of something important: while itโs okay to feel frustrated, itโs not okay to take that frustration out on our staff.
While we usually let comments like these roll off our backs, we feel it is important to acknowledge the need for a change in rhetoric. If we, as a veterinary community, donโt address this, things will never change. Mental health challenges, compassion fatigue, and burnout are very real and prevalent issues in veterinary medicine. In times of grief and frustration, it can be easy to send a hurtful text message, leave a negative review, or take to social media. It is a pretty cheap shot to call in to question a veterinarian or a support staff membersโ level of compassion and care. Before doing so, we encourage everyone to pause and remember that every person at our clinic (and every other vet clinic), from the receptionist to the veterinarian, chose this profession for one reason: because we care about animals. I know when I was 5 years old, dreaming of becoming a veterinarian, I wasnโt thinking of a paycheck, I was lead (and continue to be lead) by my steadfast love and compassion for all animals.
We understand that caring for a sick pet can be stressful, and emotional. We know that financial limitations, difficult decisions, our scheduling limitations, and the fear of losing a beloved pet can bring out some very difficult emotions. We never expect anyone to navigate those moments without feelings of frustration, sadness, or grief. But we do ask that those feelings be expressed with respect and kindness toward the people who are trying to help.
We may not be perfect, but two things are absolutely true: we care about your pets and we always do the best we can. Every patient matters to us, and every member of our team works hard to provide the best care possible within the circumstances of each individual case.
We welcome questions, concerns, and constructive feedback, but personal attacks and disrespect toward our team are not okay.
Let's support one another with compassion, kindness, and patience, while recognizing that everyone is doing the best they can.
We know the vast majority of our clients are beyond understanding and kind- and we are forever grateful for each of you. ๐
