The secret's out! ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ’• Kimia is expecting!

This is an especially exciting moment for Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens, as it will be our first bonobo birth in more than 10 years. Kimia's anticipated birth window is October, and our Animal Care teams will continue to closely monitor and support her throughout the pregnancy.

Bonobos are endangered great apes native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making every birth an important contribution to the future of the species. We are incredibly proud to be part of this conservation success and grateful for the dedicated teams across the Zoo who help make moments like this possible.

Join us in congratulating Kimia and celebrating this exciting new addition to the bonobo family!

$10 admission? Yes, please! ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ But before you race through the gates, hereโ€™s the scoop to make your Zoo day a breeze.

Florida heat is no joke. โ˜€๏ธWear something cool, lather on the sunscreen (and reapply!), and bring a refillable water bottle. You can cool off anytime at our misting fan Cool Zone in Riverview Courtyard, thanks to East Coast Sports! ๐Ÿ’ฆ

๐ŸŽซ Make sure youโ€™ve secured your tickets online in advance. Walk-up tickets are not available.
๐Ÿ’ณ Weโ€™re cashless, so bring a card or use your phone for payment.
๐Ÿš— Parking and food lines may get a little wild, so carpool if you can and pack your patience.

And while you're exploring, donโ€™t forget your kindness, to the animals, to staff and to each other. ๐Ÿพ

Whether itโ€™s your first time or your 50th, weโ€™re so glad youโ€™re spending the day with us. Letโ€™s make it a good one!

How do we help animals beat the heat? ๐ŸงŠโ˜€๏ธ
ย
Animal care isnโ€™t one-size-fits-all. Our teams tailor summer care to the unique needs of each species, using a variety of tools and techniques to help animals stay comfortable, active and engaged during warmer weather.
ย
For our goats, that can mean ice enrichment packed with favorite treats. These frozen snacks encourage natural foraging behaviors while providing a fun and refreshing way to cool off. Itโ€™s one example of the thoughtful, species-specific care our animals receive every day.

Our 16-year-old wattled crane recently visited Jacksonville Veterinary Surgery and Orthopedics for advanced imaging after Animal Care staff noticed intermittent episodes of unusual repetitive circling behavior earlier this year.

Initial blood work came back normal and Mr. Slate remained stable, but our Animal Health team wanted to rule out any neurological or metabolic conditions. Once his most recent chick was fully grown, they coordinated a CT scan and MRI, the only tools available for imaging the brain.

Getting him there was no small task. Wattled cranes are the largest birds in our care that can be safely manually restrained, standing up to 6 feet tall and weighing around 20 pounds.

We're thrilled to report his CT scan came back normal. Our team suspects the episodes may have been situational or part of a condition that has since resolved, and Mr. Slate will continue to be closely monitored.

Native to Africa, wattled cranes are an endangered species named for the distinctive white wattles hanging from their throat. Mr. Slate has also been an important breeding male during his time at Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens, helping raise multiple successful chicks over the years.
