🦎 Meet Our Black-Throated Monitor! 🦎

Have you ever seen one of Africa’s true reptile giants up close?

The Black-Throated Monitor (Varanus albigularis) is one of the largest lizards in Africa, capable of reaching nearly 7 feet in length and weighing over 60 pounds. Native to the grasslands and savannas of East Africa, these impressive reptiles are known for their intelligence, curiosity, powerful claws, and incredible sense of smell. Using their forked tongues, they β€œtaste” the air much like a snake to locate food and explore their surroundings.

Black-throated monitors are opportunistic feeders. In the wild, their diet may include insects, eggs, birds, fish, reptiles, and small mammals. Watching feeding time is always fascinating as they demonstrate the natural hunting and scavenging behaviors that have helped them thrive for thousands of years.

Did you know? Monitor lizards continually replace their teeth throughout their lives, and many keepers report that they can recognize familiar people and learn routines, making them one of the most intelligent reptile groups in the world.

We are so grateful for this visit and for sharing it with others.

It is encouraging to see individuals serving in, or seeking, leadership positions within our city taking the time to visit and support local small businesses. That support and acknowledgment truly matter.

We would love the opportunity to meet with any of our local leaders to share our mission, vision, impact, and values.

At FSA RECS and Floating Sea Aquatics, we believe in inclusion every day, not just during special events. We believe in the Rescue of both people and animals, the Education of all so we can better care for one another and our environment, Conservation of the natural world around us, and Service to our community.

We believe that when we care for people, animals, and nature together, we create a symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits and grows.

Most importantly, we believe in community unity.

Together, we can accomplish incredible things. We can protect and preserve treasures like our beautiful St. Johns River, advocate for wildlife and reptiles, support local businesses, and create opportunities that strengthen our community for generations to come.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to working alongside others who share a vision of a stronger, more connected, and more compassionate Jacksonville.
