Animal Rescue Fund of MS (ARF) Mississippi's largest no-kill rescue organization. Open seven days a week, but due to staffing an appointment is required. What can you do?

At ARF of MS our rescued pets stay as long as they need to in order to find a forever home. During their stay we look to serving the whole animal with attention to their comprehensive care and medical needs as well as social skills building. The shelter is typically home to over 75 cats and 300 dogs at any given time. We provide the residents a safe and happy environment while they await adoption

. Dogs are exercised regularly and volunteers spend time with them at play in the exercise yards while cats enjoy large whimsical “free –roaming” rooms with habitat to encourage exercise and exploration. All are given loving care and attention by staff and volunteers. Once rehabilitated and ready, they are carefully matched with prospective adopters and placed in loving homes. Like people, animals have distinct personalities and patterns, we at ARF of MS work to perfectly match the right animal with the family, ensuring a long lasting relationship. We are looking for volunteers to join us on October 10th at Barktoberfest at the Mississippi Museum of Art. Our volunteers will be handling dogs, walking them around or sitting with them in their wire crates and play yards. Talking to the public about the pups and collecting donations.
Message us if this is a volunteer opportunity you would want to help our pups find homes.
There will be puppy yoga, lots of great people with their pups, blessing of the pups and great music.

Normally we don't get involved in Facebook drama. BUT since this happened with one of our vets I feel we need to address it. Some of you may have seen the post by Luckney Animal Hospital about the clinic cat, Blueberry, catching her tail on fire while walking over a candle. Blueberry was immediately extinguished and only suffered some hair loss to her tail. She is fine. The quick thinking of one of Dr Zieren's techs saved the day. And she did scruff the cat, but that is the safest way to handle a cat in an emergency. Anyone that has a cat has seen the situations they can get into. But the keyboard warriors out there who have never met Dr Zieren or his staff, used his services, or even live in the state of Mississippi have decided he doesn't deserve to be a vet. They have trolled the clinic page and left 1 star reviews everywhere. We do know Dr Zieren and we do use his clinic quite a lot. He is also my personal vet. Here is what the trolls don't know or want to hear.
Dr Z has been working with the rescue community for 18 years. He has met me at his clinic on his day off, at midnight, on holidays as well as regular working hours. He takes my phone calls at all hours of the day and night. Most vets won't give out their cell numbers, and I can understand that. Dr Z gives shelter animals the same care and attention he gives any client. That doesn't happen with every vet. Dr Z has a beautiful, state-of-the-art clinic and boarding facility. The cat that they are all up in arms about, Blueberry, was saved from euthanasia by Dr Z. Blueberry had been dropped off at the emergency clinic to be put to sleep. Dr Z said no and took her to be their clinic cat. So, I want all of you that use Luckney to go out there and give him the review he deserves. He and his staff should not be treated with the disrespect these trolls are showing them.

I hope everyone remembers Durham. He was the 8 week old puppy that was found in a 15 foot ditch with 3 broken legs. He had been hit by a car a couple of weeks earlier and it broke one leg. Then about 2 weeks later he was hit again and had 2 more legs broken and was tossed into the ditch by the collision. We don't know how long he lay there but someone heard him crying and posted it on a rescue page. He was rescued and brought to the vet where it was discovered that the legs were broken. One so badly it would need amputation. But before any surgeries could be done, he had to fight off the infection in his tiny body. This was in March. Since then, he has had 2 separate surgeries to repair his front and back legs. Then he was finally strong enough for the amputation of his front leg. The damage was much too extensive to repair. Once he was discharged from the vet Durham went to a wonderful foster family. But it is time for him to have a home of his own. Durham is a wonderful pup. He loves other dogs and is fine with cats. He takes a minute to get comfortable with new people, but once he knows you, he is a very loving baby. If you think he would be the ideal dog for you please fill out an application. Meet Curly Joe. He is two years old, a happy and playful dog. He usually sports a long hairdo, but thanks to Fondren Pet Salon, he got a summer shave. He will not need regular grooming, just someone who can brush him regularly. We have him listed as a Collie mix, but the opinion at his spa day was that he was more of a Black Mouth Cur, add in a good shake of Golden Retriever. Breed is unimportant. His temperament is A+. Would be a great family dog!

Senior Sunday. Seniors ask for so little — no wild energy, no chewing chaos, just loyalty and gratitude.
Smudge, six years of waiting: So affectionate!
Butkus, seven years waiting: Dog-friendly, precious guy.
Chickory, six years waiting: Low energy, easy dog.
Blade, NINE years waiting: Still very active. A burst of energy, then he is ready to rest.
Bones, three years waiting: Don't be fooled by the grays. He loves a long walk.
Hullabalu, three years waiting: Timid at first, great for a quiet household.
Just to clarify: The years listed are shelter wait times, not their ages. These senior dogs are actually older than the numbers you see, making it even more urgent that we get them out and into loving homes.

Today one of our favorite boys was adopted. Augustus (Gus) has gone to his forever home. He was rescued off of I 55 with the help of Chrissy Cheshire in 2024 after being thrown out of a moving car. He has been the absolute best boy while he has been here. Thank you to his new mom for seeing what a gem he is.
