Lundehund Eyes: The Tie Braker
In our September Norwegian Lundehund Association of America column, Kristina Maze provides a detailed description of her breed’s almond-shaped, two-toned, dark-rimmed eye. She suggests that for judges confronted in the ring with two evenly matched Lundehunds, eye color is a “glaringly obvious tie breaker unique to this breed.”
The Lundehund eye, evolved for the specialized job of puffin hunting, is also, Kristina writes, remarkably expressive: “Like other primitive dogs, many Lundehunds express indifference—toward strangers out in public, those in the show ring, and, when obstinately ignoring their wishes at home, their human caretakers—not through physical posturing but rather through the windows to their little ‘Lundie’ souls. This author calls the not-so-subtle side eye one of her Lundehunds throws ‘the look of haughty derision.’ An AKC judge playfully describes the steely-eyed gaze she has met during Lundehund table examinations as ‘barely disguised disgusted forbearance.’ ”
