The big girls are learning a new sport: AKC Tracking

Tracking in AKC has four levels. The TD and TDX are run on grass/natural areas. The TDU and VST are run on a mix of grass/nature and urban environments like concrete or asphalt.

We’ve had about a month of work put into it and I’m very happy with their progress so far. Just this last week we started learning to catch turns.

We have bad news and good news 🐕

♥️ The bad news is that Nettle’s breeding to Wookie did not take. We checked on ultrasound at 30 days and I did a recheck today to make sure we weren’t missing a singleton. Nothing! Big bummer but looks like we are having hot girl summer this year. We will try again in the fall with a different male that I’ve yet to decide on. Stay tuned for updates on future Silken Windhound litters!!!

❤️🧡💛 The good news is everyone’s ISWS to AKC registration has been initiated. ♥️ Nettle’s paperwork went off in the mail today and 💜 Tizzy’s will be off soon. The Triple Crown litter had to have some paper shuffling go on but things are started. I’m excited to be able to compete in AKC events and to show in FSS with the Silkens soon!

For now, all Silkens produced through Black Briar Kennels will be triple registered with ISWS, UKC, and AKC. I’m not sure if I will continue to automatically register dogs/litters with UKC as the breed grows into AKC. The triple registration is probably most convenient for the time being.

Great news from our GP vet team today!!!

Suna had her third eyelids looked at and things were very normal. The tissue appeared healthy and pink without swelling. Doctor noted the healthy blood vessels there could swell and appear red during periods of stress or excitement. At her previous CAER exam, the ophthalmologist also said her third eyelids were red… and attributed It to excitement lol. Considering her medical history of zero eye drainage, squinting, or pawing, Doctor gave us the green light on breeding and doesn’t feel further work up is needed with a specialist at this time. 💖

All three of the big girls passed their eye exams today.

Pidgeon’s eyes must’ve healed up because there were no notes of fatty deposits or scarring today. Nettle’s report was completely normal and she was probably the easiest dog they saw today. I’m not kidding- she was in clinic for maybe less than 5 minutes! It was so fast I thought there must’ve been a problem lol.

The staff generously let me back to hold Suna. She’s always always always been good for veterinary work but having a vet that close to your face can be intimidating and she’s very used to me or my coworkers holding, not a stranger. Of course, she was very pleasant and the doctor asked me to “stop petting her” because it was making her wobble a bit during the exam. The tech had to say, “Oh, she’s not petting, Suna is just wagging her tail that hard!” So maybe a good thing that I was there to hold the front end and the tech was able to hold her back end. The optho noted her eyes look good but she has some redness associated with her third eyelid. She sited possible chronic conjunctivitis and recommended a follow up but noted it was likely non-heritable. To be safe, I will be visiting with our regular vet team tomorrow and will likely be making a visit to Dr. Ramsey for a thorough eye exams prior to breeding this summer.

Thistle was the only dog who didn’t get to go to Dundee today so she got a special solo outting. She hasn’t had the opportunity to try swimming yet but I think she likes it! The big girls’ eyes were still too dilated to join us but I see pack swims our future as the summer progresses.

Thank you to the vet teams at Heritage Animal Hospital for working with the pets and me today. It was super nice to be able to go in with Suna to help hold- even though it was only for my peace of mind. I highly recommend their clinics for a one-stop-shop style OFA certifications.

The adult girls will be off to get their eyes (re)checked at an OFA clinic tomorrow!

The OFA eye certification is an exam performed by a canine ophthalmologist. The dogs will have their eyes dilated then the doctor will look through a kookie scope to see if there are any abnormalities.

Some eye diseases, such as Collie Eye Anomaly, are genetic and can be tested for usng a genetic panel. CEA is common in certain herding breeds and can occur in Silken Windhounds thanks to the hint of Shetland Sheepdog in their ancestry. Other genetic eye diseases have many unknown gene components and must be tested for manually.

Eye certs through OFA are good for 1 year. I generally recheck every other year unless the optho sees something or if the dog will be bred soon. We are about six months behind since I couldn’t make it up to the MSU show this year.

Health testing isn’t just for breeding dogs. Pidgeon is no longer a breeding candidate but since Pannus has been seen further up in her lines, I make sure to have her eyes looked at, too. Last time the doctor noted she has perfectly clear vision but does have some age related wear and tear. I noted some cloudiness beforehand and was very concerned!!! Initially, I had her looked at by our local vet team and we confirmed it was unlikely to be Pannus (or something else scary). At her OFA cert, the doctor assured me it was simple fatty deposits and corneal scarring.

If you notice visual changes to your dog’s eyes or a change in their perceived vision, it’s best to contact your regular veterinarian for a check up. Most general practices can manage acute or chronic eye problems. Occasionally you may be referred to a specialist for further care of complex ocular cases. If you notice sudden perceived vision loss, squinting, unusual discharge, or a strange cloudy/dryness to your dog’s eyes, seek immediate vet attention. They say that eyes are always an emergency!

The CHIC requirements for Silken Windhounds have been updated.

One of the things that is most important to Silkens as a breed community is the health of our breeding dogs. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals keeps records of all health testing that is submitted and issues a CHIC number to dogs who have completed all recommended breed tests.

In Silkens we test for eyes, heart, thyroid, and 2 breed specific genetic disorders. Our heart testing requirement just got upgraded from auscultation (a good listen with a stethoscope) to an ECHO (ultrasound of heart function). An ECHO is performed by a cardiologist usually at a specialty hospital or health clinic and costs about $300, depending on the area.

Some heath testing only needs performed once. Genetic testing tesults for CEA and MDR1, for example, will never change. A dog who is negative will always be negative. Other health testing needs to be repeated, especially if the dog is being bred. The gold standard would be yearly heart and eye testing but due to scheduling and funding limitations, many breeders do not retest yearly unless there is a known issue with that dog or that line. I tend to only check eyes every other year or prior to breeding, if it’s been a while. Nettle just had a clean ECHO so I don’t suspect she will get another until Thistle is due (1+ year from now). Each program will run a little differently.

The most important thing to know that any and all heart testing is only a snapshot in time. A dog can develop heart disease seemingly overnight even if they recently had a clean ECHO or Holter. Health testing is not a guarantee that dogs are 100% healthy and it’s not a guarantee that the resulting puppies will be healthy. It is only information that we can use to try and make the best matches. 🐶❤️🩺

Nettle visited the cardiologist today and got an A+ on her echocardiogram ❤️

But what’s this? Upon auscultation, the cardiologist noted she has a grade 1 murmur! Not to worry- the cardiologist explained that with a normal echo, this is an “innocent” murmur and common among sighthounds when resting. Grade 1 tells this is a very soft, difficult to hear murmur. Sometimes so soft that a doctor could easily miss it! The cardiologist said she is still a go as a breeding dog. These results will be submitted to OFA tomorrow to update Neener’s health testing. We will continue to monitor her heart health as she ages 🐶

I’m still hoping to get their eyes 👀 updated in May with the ophthalmologist when I have time around my own appointments.

Bonus: the technician and cardiologist both complimented Nettle on her amazing temperament ❤️ They said she was “just perfect” and the easiest patient of the day. While health and conformation will always be an important part of the breeding puzzle, temperament is an extremely important aspect of a dog for me. Nettle may not have a ton of drive but her willingness to be a good girl for strangers at the scary cardiologist is a testament to her breeding. She is always friendly and approachable, though she wished they had treats that weren’t plain ole biscuits lol. 🦴

The AKC is pleased to accept Silken Windhounds into the Foundation Stock Service!!!

This is considered a critical first step in accepting the breed into the American Kennel Club. Silkens will hopefully be allowed to compete in AKC performance events and special Open AKC shows to earn Certificates of Merit (CM). More information to follow when the International Silken Windhound Society makes their announcement. 🐾🦴

Rally Recap
We had a great time in Rally yesterday. Suna had an ok but passing Excellent run, earning her the Rallt Excellent title. Then she came out in Master ready to rumble. She blew the course out of the water and earned herself a 100/100 Q as well as 1st place! Pidgeon was extremely consistent in both her Master runs. She earned 99/100 in both runs due to handler error! I can never quite remember when to let her sit and when to just keep moving. 🤔

Sunais now Crazy Villi Virta CSAU ✨RE✨

Obedience Update
Pidgeon and I need to practice some more! But we had some sparks of brilliance. It’s tough to train and do all the other things I do but I’m determined to finish this damned Utility title. Suna is on reserve as we work through getting an absolutely perfect stand for exam. Once we have that, it’s over for these bi***es 😎 We have another try tomorrow and looking forward to it!

PSA
We started PSA training and are waitlisted for a trial at the end of May for both the Terv’s PDCs. Here’s to hoping we get in! 🩷🩷
