This young female labradoodle wearing a pink and blue collar was found in the area of the Silverwoods Independent Living (1700 State Highway 37, Toms River, NJ 08757). She is currently at the Ocean County Animal Shelter. Please share to the various lost pet groups to help us get her home!

This is a public service announcement about retractable leashes.

Two words: they suck. Not only do we not recommend them, we don't permit them. I will spare you the pictures of the dog, but we had a dog several years ago that lost a foot because of one. Those thin cords are like razors and when one wraps around a limb, they can cause amputations, serious lacerations, skin burns, and strangulation of the dogs. They can also harm people.

The attached picture is my wrist twelve years after a retractable leash cut my wrist open to the bone. I wasn't the one using the retractable leash, but I stepped in to try to save a panicking dog and the leash wrapped around my wrist and cut in hard in under 5 seconds and this is the scar 12 years later. A strong dog can also yank the plastic holder out of your hand and run straight into a car and you can't do jack to stop it. Some dogs can bite through the cord and run. In short, this is an invention on par with hydrogen blimps and we all know how those worked out.

I can hear some of you saying: "Oh, I use mine all the time without a problem" and dismissing the warning I am giving. Don't. You're not infallible and all it takes is one tiny mistake to create an epic and tragic disaster. Get a real leash and use it properly.
