We will be closed Monday September 7th for Labor Day! If you need medication refills, preventions, food, or bring your fur baby to come see us, we will be open Friday 7:00-5:30 and Saturday 8:00-12:00. Jackson Pet Emergency Clinic will be available during our closed hours.

Canine Allergies: More Than Just an Itch

Allergies are a common cause of chronic itching and skin disease in dogs. Signs may include excessive scratching, paw licking, recurrent ear infections, redness, hair loss, and secondary bacterial or yeast infections.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include allergy management, parasite prevention, medicated therapies, and medications such as Apoquel or Cytopoint to help control allergic itching and inflammation.

If your dog is experiencing persistent itching or recurrent skin or ear problems, an examination can help determine the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Long body. Short legs. BIG personality.

August was the month of the Dachshund!!!

Weiner dogs, or Dachshunds, were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers. Today, they’re better known for being loyal, hilarious, stubborn, and convinced they’re much bigger than they actually are!

Fun facts:
• They come in smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired coats
• Their long bodies were designed for squeezing into burrows
• They LOVE to sniff, dig, and explore
• They have a reputation for being brave little watchdogs

One thing to watch: Their long backs put them at higher risk for IVDD, a spinal disc disease. Watch for reluctance to jump, back pain, wobbliness, weakness, or difficulty walking.

Keeping your Dachshund at a healthy weight and limiting repeated jumping can help protect that adorable long back!
