Follow up on the dogs' Monday Elite S fun.
Turns out that Miko found at least 2, and probably 3 of the hides she 'missed,' though she didn't stick long enough for me to call them with confidence. Happy to have identified a hole in her training.

Toka was tired all day Tuesday. Not just 'tired,' actually. As usual I woke up at 5:30. My quicksilver morning glory bounced upstairs and greeted me with her usual happy face and happy sneezes. We got up and puttered around the house for 20 minutes or so, waiting for Red Dog to come downstairs.

He did not. We took Miko out for a hour walk, and came back - expecting him to be waiting eagerly for us.

Except he wasn't. He hadn't budged an inch. I worked for about half an hour before he made an appearance, and on our short walk, he dawdled.

I cancelled his UWTM appointment, figuring he deserved a day to lounge around and snooze.

That information is also valuable. If I enter him again, it'll be in afternoon trials which are 'close' (1 1/2 hr radius). Looks like I may have to host a few Elite S trials in the fall....

Here are some photos of him at a recent trial. He's pretty handsome!

The pups and I traveled to Rockaway NJ for 2 Elite S trials today. Toka was in the morning trial, and Miko ran FEO in the afternoon trial.

Let's talk about Miko first. We have been concentrating on tracking with a soupçon of agility. Sprinkle a bit of obedience, nose work & acting/modeling training on top of that. For how little NW we've done, she gave a solid performance. We missed one hide in each search. I'm certain that she actually found that second hide in the last search, she just didn't stick. I'm proud of and happy with her effort, her attitude and how much fun she had.

As for Toka, I was *quite* concerned about my little red dog when we arrived at Camp Winnebago, the trial site. He didn't want to get out of the car. It was damp, chilly, and not great conditions for an older dog with arthritis.

Because of how I messed him up last weekend, I'd promised him (and myself!) I'd stay out of his way.

I told him 'boyo, all you need to do is get 50 points today, and you're done with trialing. This can be your last trial. If you don't want to do it, we can head home right now.'

He looked straight at me and got out of the car. That was his 'hold my beer!' moment.

We missed one hide in the first search, and he was perfect after that. Toka clearly told me when he'd found all 5 hides in search 2. In the 1.5 minute 'Alley Search,' he gave me the whale eye after he'd found 2 hides - and perfect! He'd found both of the hides in that area.

In his last search, there was a converging odor puzzle. He found 2 relatively close hides, and then moved on, and found two anothers. I could tell by the way he held his ears that he'd missed one in the converging odor puzzle and knew it. With intensity, he headed back, and bam, hit the last hide.

He wasn't fast. At this point in his life, he kinda-sorta has one speed. But His Redness was determined, focused, and best of all, really enjoyed himself.

I was teary eyed in the Alley Search, and cried as he found his last hide. He's 11. He's got cervical degeneration and hip dysplasia. This may very well have been his last trial.

Thrilled he was 5th overall. Big whup, 5th place. It is a big whup because my old trooper beat out dogs way, way younger than he is. And the dogs that placed before him were whippersnappers, too.

He earned his NACSW Elite S2 title.

I'm torn between letting him trial in Elite S's, and simply retiring him from trialing. He can be my demo dog when I judge, and dog in white for the NACSW trials I host, join in practices/coaching, continue with therapy dog work through Cornell Companions, and enjoy his twice weekly UWTM sessions at Cornell.

The summer is upon us, and I personally won't enter an Akita in anything during the hot weather. It's cruel, unkind and selfish to ask a double coated dog to work in 90 + degree temps(and shockingly (at least to me) there are people out there that do). If so, it's not that 'my dog loves it!' it's that YOU want the leg or the title and your generous, hard-working friend says 'Ok. I'll do it for you.'). There are 3 or 4 months for me to see how he does, and time for him to tell me what he wants to do.

Lucky, lucky me to have had such a willing, generous, splendid teammate and partner. Lucky, lucky me to have a dog who willingly gives me his all, who is smart enough and experienced enough to be able to figure out odor puzzles. Lucky, lucky me to have my little red dog grace my life.

I thank you with all my heart, Toka.

Miko was in 2 novice fetch tests today. She did great! Her handler, maybe not so much, costing her on Q. BAH! (yah, Lynne, you don't have to mention that I screwed up to me again, believe me, I'm beating myself up! ;) )

We did a couple of quick NW searches after that, and we're just back from a mini-TDX type track. She had to work through a feral cat glaring at us from her position near the neighbor's house, which she did with minimal encouragement.

A busy day!

His Redness and I are taking Sue Yanoff's 'Senior Dog Seminar' through Ithaca Dog Training Club on Friday evenings. Last week we were discussing pain management, and I was struck by how incredibly useful having pet insurance has been. Especially for Kiyo, whose treatment plan included nearly everything Sue mentioned at one time or another.

For those of you who are interested, here's the list (including standard tx's)
-- NSAIDs
-- Joint supplements (which may? work? Apparently the hot new product is eggshell membrane. Dasuquin is a 'it won't hurt them and may help' supplement. Green lipped mussel may also help)
-- Adequan injections (worked incredibly well for Kiyo, until they didn't)
-- LIbrella (introduced after Kiyo died - somewhat controversial drug)
--Cortisone injections (the # of times these can be done is limited)
-- Shock wave therapy
-- PEMF therapy
-- Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP inections, can contain Hyaluronic Acid)
-- Exercise to keep excess weight off
-- Cold laser
-- Underwater treadmill sessions (Toka has these 2x a week - the Cornell Rehab pod is one of his happy places)
-- Stem cell injections (we did not try this)
-- Acupuncture/electro-acupuncture (Kiyo would make a B-line to the orthopedic bed after her UWTM session; she *loved* her needling)
-- Boswelia, curcumin/tumeric, chinese herbs

"At home" help includes orthopedic beds, ramps/stairs for cars & human beds (jumping out of cars/off beds can be really hard on their shoulders), non-slip rugs or matting on slippery floors.

At one point we had a dog bed at the bottom of the stairs to prevent Kiyo from slamming down on the floor as she came down the stairs, and in case she tripped or stumbled.

I *think* I listed everything Sue mentioned. Will update the list if I remember something else.

As Toka ages, we'll introduce more of these therapies. Alas, he is not a good candidate for acupuncture. He's too leery of vets and anyone getting too close to his feet.

Here's a photo of His Redness looking particularly red, because he's been groomed and blown out. Amazing how deep his color is, and how varied the shades of color - from off white to a deep orange. Love his black tips! He's Just So Handsome!

Miko (AKA "Miss Moops") and I were in western Ohio this past weekend, for a tracking seminar (Advanced Urban Tracking) with Mike Roehrs. We learned an *incredible* amount! We're still not great, but have definitely improved.

His assistant, George Sype, took some photos. Here are ours.

My interest & enthusiasm waned when Kiyo moved to heaven. Combine that with a day where I had 12 students lined up for classes & half of them didn't show and/or gave me virtual no notice that they weren't coming to class ("It's 4 PM, my class is at 6 and I've been sick since I woke up this morning." "Oh, I it's 4:30, class is at 7 and I've got guests in from out of town" blah, blah, blah). Toss 'I forgot to bring my check/money/payment' on top of that and....

You end up with an unmotivated instructor.

This, however, brought nose work joy back into my life. Our group's first Summit title. Well done, Team Killian (and one of the many things I love about this is that Killian is a rescued COLLIE. Not a purpose bred lab, or a BC or a golden).

Miko & I got to explore the Bowling Green State University campus. She was entranced by the incredible number of rabbits and geese - and yet, sat calmly for this snap.

And western Ohio is so flat - have not been in this area for several years, and I'd forgotten about that.

Miko's tracking seminar starts at 1. I was catching up on some work when Miko started to get antsy. Figured a bit of training would help take the edge off. It took several tries for her to simply walk to me - she kept running in with enthusiasm.
