Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

September is National Service Dog Month, and before the month comes to an end, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible dogs who dedicate their lives to helping others.

Service dogs are so much more than companions. Through specialized training, they help people live with greater independence, confidence, and safety — performing important tasks that can truly be life-changing.

To every service dog working quietly beside their person each day: we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate the remarkable work you do.

And a special thank you to the trainers, organizations, families, and veterinary teams who help keep these amazing dogs healthy and ready to do what they do best.

From all of us at VCA Colonial Animal Hospital, thank you to every service dog for your dedication, loyalty, and extraordinary partnership. 🐾

September is Pet Memorial Month.

The pets we’ve loved leave paw prints on our hearts long after we say goodbye. We remember their little routines, their big personalities, and all the ways they made life brighter.

This month, we invite you to honor a beloved pet who has passed. If you feel comfortable, share a photo, their name, and a favorite memory in the comments. We would be honored to remember them with you.

With love from all of us at VCA Colonial Animal Hospital. 🐾

🐾 It’s Deaf Dog Awareness Week!
Deaf and hearing-impaired dogs make amazing companions. They may experience the world a little differently, but they have just as much love, personality, and joy to share. Many learn to communicate with their families through hand signals, body language, and a little creativity. 💜
Do you share your life with a deaf or hearing-impaired dog? We’d love to see a photo and hear what makes them special!

September is Happy Cat Month, and we want to meet the cats who make your days brighter!
How can you tell when your cat is happy? Maybe it’s a slow blink, a head bump, a playful burst of energy, or a nap in their favorite sunny spot. Every cat has their own way of showing it!
Please share a photo in the comments and tell us your cat’s name and what makes them happiest. We’d love to see them! 🐾

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month
Pets can’t tell us when they hurt—and many instinctively hide their discomfort. Recognizing subtle changes can help us identify pain sooner and keep them comfortable.
Watch for signs such as:
• Difficulty getting up, climbing stairs, or jumping
• Limping, stiffness, or moving more slowly
• Changes in appetite, sleep, or grooming
• Panting, pacing, restlessness, or hiding
• Irritability or less interest in family and favorite activities
Pain should never be considered “just part of getting older.” If your pet seems different, talk with your veterinarian. Together, you can create a safe treatment plan to improve their comfort, mobility, and quality of life.@
Never give your pet human pain medication unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.
Awareness is the first step toward helping our pets feel their best. 💙

At VCA Colonial Animal Hospital, we feel incredibly lucky to care for so many amazing dogs — and to get to know the families who love them.
So before August comes to an end, help us celebrate!

Here’s to the dogs who make our houses homes, our walks more interesting, and our hearts a whole lot fuller. 🐾❤️
Happy National Dog Month from all your friends at VCA Colonial Animal Hospital!

🌙 It’s 10 PM… and suddenly you have a question about your pet.
Maybe they’re acting a little differently. Maybe you’re wondering about a medication, something they ate, a new symptom, or whether they need to be seen.
You don’t have to sit and worry.
💬 Live Chat is available through the myVCA app, giving you access to veterinary guidance when questions come up — even outside normal appointment hours.
It can be a helpful first step when you’re not sure what to do next.
📱 Open the myVCA app and look for Live Chat.
Because pet questions don’t always happen between 9 and 5. ❤️🐾
