It's Science Says Sunday! Humans are capable of separating lexical (the words being spoken) and intonational (the tone) vocal cues, which is thought to make our brains more efficient at processing language. Can dogs do the same?

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the researchers in this study explored whether dog brains can separate and integrate both lexical and intonational information of human sounds.

They found that they dogs used one region of their brains for figuring out if a sound was a word, and what that word meant, and a different region for determining if a word's intonation meant anything. Therefore, like humans, there are neural mechanisms in our dogs' brains to analyze and integrate word meaning and intonation separately.

If there's one things students and grads at the Academy take away from their education, it's this: they understand and know the importance of motivation. They know that the key to helping a dog stay motivated during the training process is breaking down criteria so the dog "wins" enough to stay in the game.
