Great tips!! 🐝🐝
GROUND BEES ... an unwelcome danger for all trail users!
These are generally wasps or hornets nesting in the ground just under the surface. They become agitated as traffic passes over the nest entrance.
Every trail user should be paying attention to the ground and steer clear of any holes where bees are visible. Here are some tips for avoiding an unpleasant situation:
✔️When riding in a group, check if anyone has an allergy (and where their epi-pen or antihistamines are stored).
✔️All riders behind horses should be watching for disturbed holes from the horse(s) ahead of them.
✔️Pay attention to your horse "overreacting" to a bug bite, jumping, flinching, or aggressively trying to reach an insect.
🚫Avoid riding during peak bee hours (usually late morning to early afternoon).
✔️Be cautious on narrow trails with steep uphill and downhill corridors: turning around on narrow trails like these can be difficult, moving together briskly forward will be helpful.
✔️Ground bees don't move very fast (bonus). While there's a little advantage there, getting out quickly, preferably upwind, minimizes contact. Runners and cyclists should sprint away, and horses should move forward at a trot or canter until everyone is at a safe distance.
✔️Wear long sleeves to minimize your skin exposure.
✔️Consider carrying a first-aid kit, sting wipes, and antihistamines in case of a sting.
Should you do have the unfortunate experience of hitting a ground nest, make a mental note of the location and alert the stewards of that particular trail to its presence.
