Mobility Danes of New England, Inc.

Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. Our second mission is to serve our local community. SDP’s farm

is a destination for all ages — from teens doing community service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

Acorn, Echo, Pecan, and Onyx had a training rendezvous yesterday in Portsmouth, NH. It was a perfect day for both indoor and outdoor work. While Acorn and Trainer Doug spent the morning walking downtown Portsmouth and also sitting for breakfast in one of the many area restaurants, the girls spent the time hitting the stores - Barnes & Noble, Trader Joe’s, Ocean State Job Lots, Market Basket, Guitar Center, and several others. The stores were extra busy due to the holiday weekend, so it was a great time to practice pace, down/stays, and focus while navigating the crowds. Acorn is conspicuously absent from this photo reel, as he managed to elude the camera all morning.🙈

Acorn had a fun-filled Friday morning, starting off with a Costco shopping trip. Unbeknownst to Acorn, at least initially, is that his foster dad was also shopping there. Even among all the scents back by the bakery and meat departments, Acorn’s nose picked up on the presence of this familiar human from at least 30 feet away. Once the cover was blown, Acorn did a terrific job ignoring the distraction and staying focused on his job.

After Costco, Acorn visited Danvers Indoor Sports, where they were wrapping up their busy summer schedule of youth sports camps. Acorn drew quite an impromptu crowd of kids and one of their coaches, who wanted to learn all about Acorn and his training. Acorn even did a quick demonstration on how he helps his handler recover from a fall. Acorn also got in some great stairs practice at DIS.

Final stop was Guitar Center, where Acorn rode their wheel chair lift up and down, and also got to observe a drum lesson in progress.

Acorn was a happy boy when he got home, where he had his lunch and took a well-deserved nap!

Miss Onyx was in Kittery during very busy school shopping and she did great. Traffic, kids running around didn't bother her at all. She worked on stairs and walked over different textured surfaces and she didn't hesitate. You go girl! 🐾

We had a very busy and productive day over at the Kittery Trading Post today. Cashew did an excellent job practicing his "under" command and successfully achieved boredom. Meanwhile, Izzy spent some time reading “Cat Tails” and learning more about how to live with them.

After achieving boredom watching some indoor ice hockey practice and visiting the food court at the North Shore Mall, Acorn finished his morning of training by paying a visit to our friends at Bentley Warren Trucking, Inc. We saw quite a few large dump trucks and 18-wheelers get on and off the scale, giving us the opportunity to walk next to each one of them while they were driving and idling. We also saw a number of enormous front-end loaders moving around the property. Acorn did a great job with the scary trucks and machinery, but he was very thankful to get back home with his buddies Walnut, Simba, and Pluto!

Echo and Cricket enjoyed a little playtime in the sprinkler after their training today.
Echo loves the water but Cricket figured out how to dodge it. She’s a princess 🩷

One more for entertainment! Results from the frog hunt. If you look closely next to the rock on the left with Walnut and Simba you will see the brave frog before he bounced into the bushes. All is well 🐸

After training today the boys went frog hunting! Acorn and Walnut managed to stay dry but Simba loves to swim. This frog ended up outsmarting the boys and jumped out into the bushes.
