π¦π₯¬ EAT YOUR GREENS! Why Dark Leafy Greens Are So Important for Bearded Dragons! π₯¬π¦
One of the most common things we hear from bearded dragon owners is, "My bearded dragon refuses to eat its greens!"
But did you know that feeding the proper balance of insects and vegetables from an early age can make a HUGE difference in your dragon's eating habits?
π BEARDED DRAGONS' DIETS CHANGE AS THEY GROW!
Bearded dragons are omnivores, but their nutritional needs change significantly throughout their lives.
π¦ Babies (0β6 months): Approximately 70β80% insects and 20β30% greens and vegetables.
π₯¬ Juveniles (6β12 months): Gradually transition toward a more balanced diet, increasing greens while decreasing insects.
π₯ Adults (12β18+ months): Approximately 70β80% greens and vegetables and only 20β30% insects!
π§ GREENS ARE ALSO AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF HYDRATION!
Bearded dragons naturally obtain a significant portion of their moisture from the foods they eat. Fresh leafy greens provide valuable hydration while delivering essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
A dragon that consistently eats its greens benefits from additional moisture that helps support healthy digestion and overall hydration. Fresh drinking water should still always be available!
π₯¬ NOT ALL GREENS ARE CREATED EQUAL!
Some excellent staple greens include:
β
Collard greens
β
Mustard greens
β
Turnip greens
β
Dandelion greens
β
Escarole
Rotate these regularly to provide variety and balanced nutrition!
π¨ SO WHY WON'T MY DRAGON EAT ITS GREENS?
One of the biggest mistakes owners make is continuing to feed adult bearded dragons the same insect-heavy diet they received as babies.
Think about it. If your dragon is constantly being offered delicious, protein-rich insects, why would it bother eating its vegetables?
When bearded dragons are introduced to greens early and their insect intake is properly reduced as they mature, they're much more likely to develop healthy eating habits!
A dragon raised on the proper dietary balance should generally be much easier to keep eating its greens. However, even properly raised dragons can become picky, and appetite changes can also indicate husbandry or health problems.
π¦ REMEMBER: Just because your bearded dragon LOVES insects doesn't mean insects should make up the majority of its diet forever!
Proper nutrition is one of the most important parts of keeping your dragon healthy for years to come!
