Harley Quinn is a beautiful cat who just turned one year old on May 10th. She arrived at our rescue after being hit by a car when she was just about eight weeks of age. The lady who brought her in was behind the car who hit her. We rushed her to an emergency clinic. She seemed to have been hit and thrown off to the side without being run over. She had some recovery to make but thankfully she had no internal injuries or broken bones. She had some scratches and some broken teeth (they were baby teeth and with time her adult teeth grew in). She got off to a rough start, but she is a tough little girl and has had no lasting effects from it. She is stunning, playful, and friendly. Harley is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, has tested negative for her Fiv/Felv test and microchipped. She is litter box trained and an indoor cat. She plays with the other cats at the shelter but has not lived with dogs. If Harley Quinn looks like a perfect fit for your family, please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for more information email Karron at [email protected] or call 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Harley Quinn.

Yoshi is an exceptional little Pomeranian! He just turned 6 years old in March and weighs just under ten pounds. He is playful, very personable and happy. He seems to get along well with other dogs his size and does not seem to have an opinion either way about cats. Yoshi appears to be housebroken and walks on leash. He is neutered, up to date on vaccination, heartworm negative, on prevention, microchipped, and crate trained. Anyone interested in Yoshi needs to own their home and have the time to spend with him. He is a breed that will require grooming. This ongoing maintenance can be expensive so please be sure this is something you are willing to take on. If you are interested in adding Yoshi to your family please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for additional information email Karron at [email protected] or call 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Yoshi.

Is your houseplant secretly dangerous to your pet? 🪴⚠️

March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to take a look around your home. These 8 common plants look beautiful — but they can seriously harm your dog or cat. Here’s what you need to know:

Pothos — Contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

Peace Lily (+ all lilies) — One of the most dangerous plants for cats. True lilies (Tiger, Easter, Stargazer) can cause acute kidney failure in cats even in small amounts. Peace lilies cause severe oral irritation and vomiting in both dogs and cats.

Philodendron — Like pothos, contains calcium oxalate crystals causing burning and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and throat.

Tulips — The bulb is the most toxic part. Ingestion causes intense GI upset, drooling, loss of appetite, and in large amounts, heart and respiratory issues.

Monstera — Contains insoluble oxalates that cause mouth irritation, excessive drooling, and vomiting.

Daffodils — Contain lycorine, an alkaloid that triggers vomiting. The bulbs are the most toxic and can cause severe reactions including low blood pressure and tremors.

Aloe Vera — The gel inside contains saponins and anthraquinones that cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and tremors in pets.

Jade Plant — Exact toxic mechanism is unknown, but ingestion causes vomiting, lethargy, incoordination, and slow heart rate.

🐾If your pet is acting off or you suspect they got into something, reach out to a Dutch vet right away. In an emergency, always head straight to your nearest emergency animal hospital.

🐶🐱Know a fellow pet parent who could use a reminder? Send this to them — it might be the most important thing they see today.

June was found as a baby kitten just eight to ten weeks of age. The last picture is of when she was found. She was behind our building on top of a tarp that was covering one of the outdoor dog exercise runs. She had most likely climbed up there for safety reasons and then could not find a way back down. She was tiny, frightened, and hissing at anyone looking to dislodge her from her perch. She was not safe there, so even though she protested loudly, she was brought inside. She was placed in a secure enclosure with a soft bed along with food and water that was now readily available. June no longer had to search for nourishment to survive. It did not take too long for her to warm up to the people and surroundings she was now calling home. She does not realize there is an even better life waiting for her in a real home with a family. She is now an adult, is spayed, up to date on vaccines, has tested negative for feline aids and leukemia virus, and is microchipped. She is totally an indoor cat now. June has a quiet, sweet disposition. Anyone interested in adopting her needs to own their own home. If this beautiful girl looks like a perfect fit please fill out an adoption application through our website at [www.humanesocietycitrus.com](http://www.humanesocietycitrus.com) and for additional information please email Karron at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or call 352-586-9699. Hello, let me shake your hand, nice to meet you, my name is Charlie! Charlie is a people dog and seems to get along with everyone. He was raised in an adult home and has been around older children but not very young children. Young children will most likely cause him to be uneasy. He is good with other dogs in his size range but has not been around cats. Charlie likes going for walks and has a really good time playing ball or chasing squeaky toys. Charlie is eight years old and a bit of a Velcro dog, he does not like being alone. He needs someone who does not leave him home alone most of the time. He is a Miniature Schnauzer mix, weighs 18 to 20 pounds and has plenty of energy. Charlie does not like riding in a car unless he is being held. Charlie is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped, and housebroken. Anyone interested in making Charlie a member of their family needs to be able to give him the time and love this boy is missing. They need to own their own home and preferably have a fenced yard for potty breaks and play with his new family. If Charlie looks like the perfect fit for you please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for additional information please email Karron at [email protected] for call her at 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Charlie.

UPDATE....OSCAR HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!

Oscar is eight years old and, according to his previous owner, a mix of Dachshund and Miniature Pinscher, weighing 20 pounds. Judging from his coat color and two different colored eyes, the Dachshund parent was most likely dapple colored. He lost his home due to a death in the family, not because of any behavior issues. Oscar lived in an adult home and has been around other small dogs but has not lived with cats. Someone in his previous home either took him for walks or brought him along for outings. When Oscar sees his harness and leash, he immediately gets very happy and excited!! He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped, crate trained, and housebroken. Oscar will do best in an adult home. Anyone interested in making Oscar a member of their family needs to own their home and preferably have a secure fenced yard for play and potty breaks. If you feel this sweet gentleman would be a perfect addition to your family please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for additional information please contact Karron by email at [email protected] or call her at 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Oscar.

UPDATE.....LUKA HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!

Luka is a Miniature Poodle and weighs just under 15 pounds. He has the elegant look of a Standard Poodle! Luka was born on September 1, 2024, so he is just slightly over one year of age. He is a beautiful apricot color with a wonderful quality coat. His tail was not docked. This boy was the only dog in his previous home, and it took a little time to get him used to interacting and playing with other dogs. He now loves playtime with the other dogs his size. He is loving, energetic, playful, and a very happy boy! He is still a puppy, with puppy antics, energy, and a need for attention and direction. He is a breed that must be professionally groomed every four to six weeks. Anyone interested in adopting Luka needs to understand this is not optional. They need to be willing and able to fit this expense into their budget. Anyone applying for Luka needs to own their home and have a secure fenced yard for potty and playtime. Luka is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention. He is microchipped, crate trained and walks on lead. If Luka looks like a perfect fit for you and your family, please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for additional information please email Karron at [email protected] or call her at 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Luka.

If you look up the phrase lap dog, you might just find a picture of Stella Luna! This little girl is the absolute best snuggle bug you will find. Stella is 5 to 7 years of age and is a Chihuahua mix. In her photos she appears to be white, but she has some spots listed as cream, however I would describe them as a beautiful champaign color. At just eight pounds you might think she would be a timid little girl, but you would be wrong. She is friendly and loving with adults. Stella is possessive of her person and possessions (food and toys). She does not care for cats. The only thing she appears to fear are young children; they make her extremely nervous. She needs to be the canine queen in her new home. Anyone interested in adopting Stella needs to have the time and desire to give her plenty of love and attention. You need to own your home and have a very secure area to take her potty outside. She is fast and can escape through a small opening. Stella is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, is heartworm negative and on monthly prevention. She is microchipped. She will use potty pads or go potty outside. If Stella sounds like the perfect fit for you, please fill out an adoption application through our website at www.humanesocietycitrus.com and for additional information please email Karron at [email protected] or call her at 352-586-9699. An approved adoption application and adoption fee are required to adopt Stella Luna.
