I’ve posted a few things today on screwworm fly. Many clients are using Credelio and research indicates it works well. In this study, 100%. These drugs are highly effective against fleas and ticks, but can exacerbate seizures in sensitive pets. Don’t be afraid. Talk with your veterinarian.

Lotilaner demonstrated a rapid onset of action and a high efficacy against C. hominivorax. We therefore recommend lotilaner for the effective treatment of myiasis in dogs.

This study is a small patient population, but appears intriguing for screwworm control. At this time, the FDA has not approved it, so this is an extra label application. Since we don’t have any known present issues, it’s nice to know that Nexgard was found to kill screwworm larvae.

New World screwworm (NWS) myiasis is an infestation by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae that consume the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Screwworm fly is in the news as a potential threat for dogs, cats, humans and other warm blooded animals. Cover any wounds and keep pets clean. A new drug has been approved on an emergency use status by the FDA. At this time this issue is not a real local risk. Be aware but don’t be afraid.
