Bear is making solid progress with working on ignoring distractions and staying fully engaged with me during basic obedience and focused heeling, even alongside the other dogs. 🐾

Bear is a shelter dog from Kiya Koda who is currently in our training program as we work toward helping him find his forever home. During his first week, we’re focusing on building a positive bond through play while introducing foundational recall skills. He is a very sweet boy and a pleasure to work with.

Is your dog truly engaged, or just distracted? 🤔

Many dog owners mistake a lack of focus for stubbornness, but the truth often lies in engagement. If your dog takes the reward and then checks out, they're not fully trained—they're just participating.

It's not about struggling with obedience; it's about building a foundation of engagement. When you skip this crucial step, your dog has no real reason to listen. They aren't stubborn; they've simply learned that your words lack consistent meaning, leading to what we call 'learned irrelevance.'
Talking more won't solve the problem; it often teaches your dog to tune you out. True understanding and responsiveness come from consistency and a clear system.

If your dog checks out on you, you don't need more commands—you need a better system for engagement.
