📣Hello all! Quick 🚧construction🚧 update photos. Our indoor kennels are mostly done-we're just making minor adjustments and sealing interior edges to keep a good seal for sanitation/health purposes. I do intend to build lofts with some form of covering/curtain, etc. (material suggestions welcome!) inside them, so they eventually have a perch area as well as a hiding/covered area, once I have the outdoor runs done and some time to focus on the details. The parts for the outdoor runs have all been ordered; I am just waiting for shipping updates. We will start prepping drainage and turf for them in the near future.
On a related note, I do want to mention that we've had probably half a dozen calls in the past few weeks from various individuals looking for solutions to help them keep their pets during times of hardship for their family. It has been heartbreaking to have to admit that we are not at a stage of development where it is safe for us to open intake at this point — not just because of the progress on the physical structure, but because we are not ready administratively. We are still in desperate need of people to serve as board members and help us brainstorm, from policy and procedure development to fundraising and grant-seeking, to enable subsidized stays for people who are not in a position to pay for their pet's stay due to the hardship they are enduring. Additionally, I would love to see us start to develop our own emergency short-term foster network for increased capacity, as well as confidential locations for domestic violence survivors. We also need to start recruiting volunteers to help with enrichment and focused human interaction for the pets we bring in, to try to minimize their stress.
I would like to see us network with various social work networks/community resources that could send direct referrals in for people who may be reluctant to get the assistance they need because they fear for their pets as well. We would be more than happy to hear from anyone with insights into how to get started on that path.
